Making fun of how out of touch the New York Times is...well, it's
like shooting your hunting buddy in the neck. Just not sporting.
But I'm a bad sport. I don't even do sports. I do things like metaphors.
So I'll just politely wonder how long Times writer Daphne Merkin's space capsule has been adrift, and how ground control finally reached her, and how they downloaded her oxygen-deprived, trippy-dippy, gender-bendy Sunday Styles piece (login required) inspired by Judith Butler's 1990 Gender Trouble. Yes, that would be the book that launched queer theory, oh, last century. It's almost enough to make you want to listen to Kenny G sing theory. Almost.
If you are not one of the NYT Select, take a tip from Monica and go back to the sexually chaotic future-past of the Cockettes. The Times will probably do a piece on them soon--they're gonna be big in the '70s. Century tba.
