DJ Compilation Of The Month: The Great Copycat Contest

Copycat_dvd_1 If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then popular music is ready for induction into the Sincerity Hall of Fame. This month's DJ-produced compilation is Bill Zurat's 2005 marathon collection, Copycats, Imitators and Soundalikes.

See if you can identify which well known band is, ahem, being paid homage to in each track below. The first correct listing in the comments section to this post wins the WFMU T-shirt of your choice. Since some tracks rip off more than one band at a time, the final arbiter will be Bill Z himself. Keep your guesses in the right order please!

Luv - Shoes Off (Boots On)   |   Primitive Romance - The Spirit's Still There   |   Neu Elektrik - Cover Girl

Scott Wilk and The Walls - Radioactive   |   Marc Eric - California Home

Sidney Joe Quails - How Can You Say Goodbye   |   Sleepy Hollow - Am I Talking Out of Turn

Blue Things - It Ain't No Thing Babe   |   Redeye - Games   |   Repetition - A Still Rephlex

The Divorce - Family   |   Edgar Broughton Band - It's Falling Away

Steve Tilston - Simplicity   |   Tin Tin - Lady In Blue   |   Jobriath - Blow Away

Listen up: LUV is original in it's own. Not a pastiche, tirbute or whatsoever. Big in the Netherlands, the three girls scored several top 10 hits. After lots of internal fights they made a reunion this year, which was also the basis for a reality soap called 'Back in LUV'. In other ways: don't mess with Dutch heritage. This is serious shit...

LUV is neither a copy of ABBA nor Boney M. (as some readers/posters have suggested here), instead they are one of the biggest dutch pop acts of late 70s / early 80s. They were not only huge in the Netherlands, but also in other european countries. I am german, and I was a disco-going chick aged 15 when they scored high, so I know what I am talking about.

Being in the same compilation with these other unknown wannabees is really uncalled for and completely undeserved and just such a shame! Aaarrgghh

(sorry for the capitals...done for clarity)

1. ABBA
2. TELEVISION (intro/syncopation) OR GANG OF FOUR (guitar sound & production)
3. JOY DIVISION
4. THE CLASH (for the intro) OR ELVIS COSTELLO (for the lyrics/vocal cadence)
5. BEACH BOYS (1966 Carl Wilson-style lead vocal & harmonies)
6. AL GREEN
7. DAVID BOWIE (lead gtr, bass & vocal circa Ziggy Stardust) OR STEELY DAN (production circa Can't Buy A Thrill)
8. BOB DYLAN (circa 1966-67, but there is a BYRDS-style Rickenbacker on the track)
9. CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG (circa Déjà Vu)
10. SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES (circa Kaleidoscope)
11. GARY NUMAN & TUBEWAY ARMY (circa Replicas)
12. CAPTAIN BEEFHEART
13. NICK DRAKE
14. BEE GEES (1967-1969 era)
15. ELTON JOHN (circa Goodbye Yellow Brick Road)

Hey you, last poster "Phil" !

Did you not read the two comments about LUV??? You still post your guess that they are a tribute for ABBA?

Are you american, or what?

LUV are not any tribute or copy group, Luv are LUV. Or would you say The Rolling Stones were the tribute to the Beatles, or what? Or The Who were a tribute to The Kinks?

Oh, Americans, you should not post about european music, you don't even try to learn our pop history.

This is really harmful for your image, wfmu, you seem to be less professional as I thought. This is a mistake that only schoolboys do. Not profesional DJs.

Abbagardis yr BONKERS.
