Shiri Mordechay is a master of gesture and rendering, splaying giant paper with her violent and grotesque imagery. There is still a bit of whimsy about her work as it seems all these used-up characters are enacting a futile dance. Unfortunately, like a lot of my favorite artists, Shiri's web presence is quite slim and the reproductions too small..but even still, her work really has to be experienced up close as they are enormous and crusty with layers of paint.

Say, Fatty, that reminds me of the '60s band Mind Garage.
The Village Voice credits them with inventing Theorock (aka Christian Rock).
