365 Days #231 - Playhour Records Collection (mp3s)
These songs come from a series of 45's from the Playhour children's record label. I don't know the date on them, but the early 70's would be a pretty good guess.
The records are very scratchy, and a couple of them are also hissy. The songs have been filtered so that the quality would be as tolerable as possible with these records.
The records deal with different categories, such as "Neighborhood / House Record", "Clothing Record", and just wait till you get to the "Social Development Record"! They consist of a cacophony of different musical styles, from standard "kiddie" fare to country to "groovy" 60's rock.

This is in part why I love WFMU. I had this set of records as a kid and I am sure they are still in their carrying case in my parent's record cabinet. I have not thought of them in years but they were a lot of fun at the time. Thanks for bringing up some nice memories for me.

Jay, I wonder if you played yours until they got as scratchy and hissy as these, or are yours the exception to the rule?!
I first bought some in a thrift store in 1999, then some more a couple of years ago through E-bay. All the records I bought had the same problems! I threw away a few of them because of how battered they were.

Nice post, and surely someone out there has some details on Playhour records.
FWIW, I've got a number of these buried in an old 45 carrying case from childhood. Sure, they were probably abused by me and my portable turntable, but can't remember a time when they didn't sound more scratched up than a Skip James 78 dragged across a construction site. And yeah, there's more of these to the canon - the "How's By You" series included a funky lil' Playhour title called "Grandmother", I believe it was.

I actually have record 11-B (TB-2-11-B), Mother Goose and Nursery Rhyme Favorites. The tracks are Lazy Mary/Good Morning Merry Sunshine, Where Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone, The Bear Went Over The Mountain, and Oh Dear What Can The Matter Be. The last track, Oh Dear What Can The Matter Be, is a really odd but catchy tune that I would love more information about!
