While hosting a guest DJ set by Mexican underground musicians Carlos Icaza (Las Comadrejas / Evil Hippie / Los Fancy Free / etc) and Angel Sanchez (Antiguo Automata Mexicano / Seekers Who Are Lovers / etc) last week, I learned a cool factoid about Mexico's premier space age bachelor, Esquivel. He didn't just write some of the greatest lounge/exotica tunes of the 60's... Esquivel also composed the soundtrack to a popular Mexican children's TV show, called "Burbujas" (Bubbles, aka "Odisea Burbujas"), in the late 70's.
As Carlos and Angel explained to me, "Burbujas" is about a do-gooder scientist and his motley crew of animal friends who fly around in a solar-powered spaceship (made out of an LP, a teacup, and a straw), fighting the evil polluter, Ecoloco. Backed by the sounds of Esquivel, who could resist? Take a listen to "Popotito 22" (real audio), and then check out these crazy videos of the show. More info here, and more videos here. Thanks to listeners Aaron and Leonore for the heads-up on these videos!
You might also enjoy videos of the old Japanese children's TV show, "Kure Kure Takora" (Gimme Gimme Octopus), posted previously on Beware of the Blog.

That's amazing! Where can one find Burbujas?

I think they took more than a few ideas from H.R. Pufnstuf.
