August 6th marks the 20th anniversary of the historical 1988 all night throwdown between squatters, local residents and police in Tompkins Square park. A curfew installed to supposedly quell the growing homeless population, and loud, late-night partying in the 10 acre park careened into rising frustration over gentrification in the historically bohemian, working class East Village, and POW: the next thing anybody knew some cops were covering their badges and beating the daylights out of anyone who came within range.
As pictured above, it seems today's urgent, urban youth have moved forward with their issues and in a WALL-E-like manner are asking for a different kind of restraint...And in today's NYC it seems things have hardly improved within the NYPD.
