The love that WFMU generates, even thousands of miles away from Jersey City
I never cease to be amazed by just how much love WFMU generates. In my travels - no matter how far a field from the radio station's New Jersey stomping grounds - I constantly run into diehard fans of WFMU. On more than one occasion I have been walking down some street in some other state (geographical, not of mind) and I will catch a glimpse of some car with a WFMU sticker on its bumper. Even in places like the San Francisco Bay Area, where there are so many good stations already (KALX, KFJC, KPOO, KFJC, KZSU, KPFA etc.), it says a lot about WFMU when people favor it over their quality homegrown FM sources.
So anyways it shouldn't really come as a surprise when I meet diehard WFMU fans from overseas too. But it does, and it always pleasantly amazes me - even thousands of miles away - at how well appreciated the unique entity that is WFMU is so appreciated for its beautifully unorthodox & truly "freeform" programming and a schedule that includes such gems as The Best Show on WFMU with Tom Scharpling or Downtown Soulville with Mr Fine Wine, and a website with a seemingly endless bounty of archived past shows,, not to mention this Beware of the Blog feature with its constantly updated flow of exciting new information and music.
Last night in Manhattan I interviewed visiting French emcee Grandpamini on why he and his friends back in Paris are such fans of WFMU and its BLOG. Below is that interview including a freestyle. There is also another YouTube clip from last night (Oct 16th outside BLVD in the LES district of Manhattan where the Bootie NYC party was jumping off). In the second live performance video Grandpamini is joined by DJ Reno - who was one of the guests on Put The Needle On The Record yesterday in the last half hour when in studio guests also included fellow French DJ/producer Com'R and BootieSF DJ/promoter Adrian. For more info on this worldwide mashup party or links to download some of the great remixes these talented DJs have done click here.
