The year is new, but the Miner is up to his old tricks serving up steaming hot platters sure to make your ears salivate:
(1) Speaking of steaming, give this dastardly boogaloo from percussion maestro Johnny Zamot a spin. His combo features trombone genius Mark Weinstein and Sun Ra sideman Pat Patrick. (Patrick, the father of the current governor of Massachusetts, was previously mentioned in Volume 10 of Mining the Audio Motherlode). ••• (2) Julia Clifford studied at the knee of Irish fiddle deity Padraig O'Keeffe and rose to become one of the great instrumentalists of Sliabh Luachra in her own right. ••• (3) Recorded a year after Eddie Harris's heady dabblings with Selmer's electric Varitone sax in '67, Paul Jeffrey plugged his axe into a Gibson Maestro attachment and levitated the studio. ••• (4) Half of this 12-piece crew of funkateers hailed from Suriname (the other half from Trinidad). Hardly revolutionary, this party-time LP was recorded months before Suriname gained its independence from the Dutch. (The DRSSB is still active today: Check out their MySpace page.) ••• (5) One member of the Berber band Izenzaren was known as Morocco's King of the Banjo. Don't dawdle, dash over and download four hours' worth of their groovy trance-y, blues-y, roots rock. ••• (6) According to his website, Callahan "is a performer whose artistic images will continue to reflect musical prisms for a long time." Refracting as much smoke as light in '76, he self-released this minor pop psyche masterpiece that popped up on three or four blogs in the past year.
