Hi: I'm DJ Handi:
Each week, I’ll be picking an archive, or aspects of shows I found compelling and hope you also do. This week is about how different WFMU DJs handled Captain Beefheart’s death at age 69. If you are new to Beefheart, learn about his importance in this article.
Scott Williams incorporated his music with Beefheart covers and musicians influenced by the Magic Band’s savage guitar, playing; Edgar Broughton, Sonic Youth, and Big Blood, linked by clips of Mother Jimmy Carl Black and Simpson’s Creator Matt Groening.
John Allen played live recordings that showed how the Magic Band on stage had amazingly punk rawness, but maintained the modern classical precision Beefheart demanded of his units.
Bill Mac on Zzzzzzero Hour, explored early blues roots of Beefheart, working with albums like Mirror Man, and the later Clear Spot.
