365 Days #364 - Sammy Hall - A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Hell (I Got Saved, Saved, Saved) (mp3s)

364 MP3:
How Do You Spell Relief (J-E-S-U-S) (3:04)
A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Hell (I Got Saved, Saved, Saved) (2:35)
Different World (3:18)

I bought this record mainly for the remarkable cover art: Sammy Hall, split seconds before his motorcycle plunges into a fiery pit of demons, is grabbed by Jesus, who dangles his new convert up by his armpits. You owe it to yourself to view this one at full size.

Sammy himself may not be damned, but some of his songs are damned catchy. If you care to sing and play along, download the songbook "The Best to You" from this page. It contains sheet music to all three songs featured here. Just one of the many treats awaiting you at sammyhall.com.

These songs were written and produced by Gary S. Paxton, who, in addition to many other things, produced the song "Monster Mash".

365 Days #361 - Toru & Kojima - Smiley / Pot Sounds (mp3s)

361 Ok, so here's my weird story behind this disc. Many years ago I was visting a friend in Japan and searching for rare records. This was during my obsession with the Beach Boy's Smile Sessions. I actually found a version of Smile Outtakes on vinyl, but the store keeper decided not to sell, since he wanted it to prove that he had rare records in his store.

At a completely different shop, I found this oddity on a shelf of completely Japanese CDs that I couldn't read accept for the spine "Smiley/Pot Sounds". I was like, "what the?" The original Smile cartoon cover was redrawn and altered.

Thinking I had found another Japanese bootleg, I put it in the player when I got home. I was so MAD! Lol! At the time, it just sounded like some Japanese guy singing Karaoke! It tossed it in my suitcase, feeling completely gypped.

MP3:
01 Meant For You (0:42)
02 Surfer Girl (2:23)
03 Little Saint Nick (2:04)
04 Don't Worry Baby (2:58)
05 Wonderful (2:09)
06 Surfer Moon (2:24)
07 I DO (2:02)
08 Please Let Me Wonder (2:49)
09 You're So Good To Me (2:22)
10 God Only Knows (2:53)
11 I Wanna Pick You Up (2:49)
12 I Just Wasn't Made For These Times (3:18)
13 Your Summer Dream (2:44)
14 Much Love (5:13)
15 By The Time it Changes to Memory (3:36)
16 Never Come Back Boys' Days (3:50)
17 Let The Wind Blow (2:58)
18 Yesterday's Promise (3:40)
19 Mysterious Night (5:34)

21 For You, 100 Years Ago (2:40)
22 I Want To Eat Whale (3:49)
23 WOMAN (4:45)
24 Spirit Of Rock'n Roll (3:30)

Sometime later I came back to the mystery of this cd. And quickly realized that I had found something even more rare, before I even knew about the labeling of Outsider Music. I would often play tracks for friends during one of those, "Look what I found" occasions. I've grown to love it, though it's headache inducing at times. Looking at the photos on the back cover and the song credits, I think I've figured out that Toru & Kojima are the same person. It's just his first and last name.

Pot Sounds is also included, for the completist. Not as interesting to the English speaker, this album is full of some of Toru's originals and a couple cover songs. The best part about Pot Sounds is that amazing art work! lol

Happy Holidays!

365 Days #360 - After Christmas Radio Spots & Songs (with an eye on the New Year) (mp3s)

360 "Is the tree down yet? Are the decorations packed away? ..." - Henry Fonda

Those are the first words spoken on Track 1 and it sets the tone for this day after Christmas. Most people are so finished with Christmas by December 26 that they begin looking forward to the next holiday (and despite some store displays already set, it's NOT Valentine's Day).

Compiled for your listening pleasure today are some after-Christmas radio spots that remind you that Christmas might be over but not forgotten, several celebrity New Year's greetings, and a majority of fun New Year's songs that will hopefully brighten this dead week inbetween holiday bashes and hangovers.

New Year's blues, comedy, novelty, blues, even disco are all represented here. You'll find something in this collection that will put a smile on your Christmas weary face.

365 Days #358 - MSR 265: 1978 Christmas Album (mp3s)

358 Up here in Canada, Songpoem albums are hard to come by. Either Canadians never took up the offer to 'become a star' as often as Americans did, or they just had relatives in the US who sent them copies. So whenever I find one, it's a momentous occasion.

Especially when the used record stores have no idea what they are and charge $1 for 'em!

Here's the tracklist for 13 Christmas-themed ditties (and a couple that are not) for your holiday pleasure:

MP3:
01 The Birthday Of Jesus Christ (Sione Lavemai Finau) (2:31)
02 Welcome The Lord (Sione Lavemai Finau) (3:21)
03 Merry Christmas From Tonga, The Friendly Island (Sione Lavemai Finau) (2:30)

365 Days #357 - Timmy Christmas - Christmas Fever (mp3s)

357 MP3:
Timmy Christmas - Christmas Fever (2:37)

This song is an utter mystery. There are white stickers affixed on top of the original label of the 45 that claim it is the product of PRM Records in Rockville Centre, NY - the date given is 1981. The recording sounds 1950s, however. The song seems to be written and produced by Richard and Paul Freitas. There is also a phone number hand-written on the original label.

Who knows? Catchy Christmas song, though!

365 Days #356 - Christmas Materials (mp3s)

Three selections for Christmas...

1 Jim Gaerhart - Clarence The Geoduck (5:53)
This is a holiday promotional 45, both in English and Japanese for the Russell Company - home of the Russell 2000 Index, and obviously made long before the company had billions of bucks. I love it.

2 Tacoma Women's Choir - Ronnie Gave To Me (3:25)
A parody of 12 Days of Christmas, and by the Tacoma (Washington) Women's Choir - recorded at a concert.

3 Al Kelly & Del Sharbutt - An Exclusive Interview With Santa (5:31)
RCA Promo (HO7H-0933) distributed to stations.

356 And... welcome to your ears to a CD I produced this year, "Previously Unreleased" - featuring Bryan Bowers, Jim Page and Evan Purcell. Recorded at ContactCreate studio in Snohomish county (Washington) Saturday, December 1. A live from the Northwest gift filled with music, chatter, holiday stories, questionable jokes, and good spirits. The best of all the holidays and a happy new year to each of you listening.

365 Days #355 - Fit To Burst! (mp3s)

355 Fit to burst are a host of British comedians and comedy actors who all made records between 1959 and 1979. There was a tradition among British funny men (and women) to make records, not just replications of their act, but specially composed songs or comic covers of standards. Some are from singles others are album tracks. But I have opted for the more obscure. Some of these names may be familiar to you and need no introduction, others may not be so familiar.

365 Days #354 - Otis Skillings - Love Can Work A Miracle (mp3s)

354 MP3:
Love Can Work A Miracle (10:03)

I wish I had this record near me as I write these notes. After listening to Otis Fodder's Christian Musical themed show on Cool and Strange Music's Friendly Persuasion, I went out in search of similar odd records. The following week or so I found this little gem at the thrift store with the standout cover. I'm only including one track because sadly the rest of the record isn't as interesting. And it's long! This is like the Alice's Restraunt of Christian Musical numbers. And it's great!

I don't know what else to say about it, but just wanted to say thank you to Otis Fodder for all the fun, music, and friendship over the years. I think we all owe him a round of applause for sticking out yet another year of 365. Cheers!

Now everyone hit play on your computer,

LOVE!

From the liner notes:

Every Year we are asked if we have a Christmas record. Now we do…and here it is... a delightful combination of music AND story! This is a FAMILY album... not just for boys and girls! The CHILDREN'S BIBLE HOUR is heard on nearly 600 radio stations worldwide. For a list of our radio outlets... (blah blah blah, etc...)
- Signed, Uncle Charlie

STORY NUMBER ONE (Track 12): JOHNNY'S STOCKING
Have you ever felt like you're just not worth much? That's the way little Johnny felt, until Gramps showed him that in God's sight we are ALL worth loving and caring about! In this delightful story, the "lead part" is played by the fantasy character of "Johnny's Stocking." It's an imaginative, interesting story with an important lesson.

If only that lesson were to not let your kids go visit weird old guys called "Gramps." Shudder.

STORY NUMBER TWO (Track 13): WHOSE BIRTHDAY?
What kind of birthday is it when the person whose birthday it is doesn't get any presents? That's what often happens at Christmas time, when the Lord Jesus is often left out of our plans. This story emphasizes to young and old alike the importance of "keeping Christ in Christmas."

Apparently it's the birthday of a deity with the maturity of a nine-year-old! It struck me–and I can't keep my mouth shut–how odd it is to celebrate Christmas for a deity because he was sacrificed by his father. Who does this and isn't some kind of psychopath? Nobody. God Yule. (That's a deity to look up!)

365 Days #351 - Borborygmi (mp3s)

351 MP3:
1. Medley (3:30)
2. Justified Appendectomy (3:01)
3. Old Blue Cross (1:52)
4. In Old Green County (2:21)
5. Terminology (3:17)
6. Specialty (4:35)
7. Hemorrhoids (2:32)
8. Remember The Days (5:39)
9. In Old Green County (reprise) (0:58)

There is absolutely no information printed on this 10" record except the word Borborygmi, which is the medical term for stomach-gurgling sounds.

A fitting name for this collection of jaunty piano-and-vocals medical parodies, apparently sung by real doctors. Only real doctors could have gotten away with singing such explicit material in the '50s/early '60s period these songs were probably recorded. Assuming this is the same bunch who did this, this record was produced to benefit the Greene County, MO Medical Society's Scholarship Foundation. It definitely wasn't for the general public - only other medical industry professionals would understand all the references.

Looking for graphics, I was just typing in mildly appropriate phrases like "singing doctors," not really expecting to find anything, and I came across this (the album cover to the right). I'd say it's a different album judging by the song titles, but they mention Greene County in their lyrics.  How many Green County singing doctors could their be?

The opening medley parodies popular songs of the day like "There's No Business Like Show Business" and "I Only Have Eyes For You" with medicine-inspired lyrics.

"Justified Appendectomy" shows off some mystery doctor's impressive operatic singing. "Old Blue Cross" is a finger-snapper with a tap-dancing (?) interlude.

"Hemorrhoids" is cornball country with nice harmony vocals singing lyrics that would make Gene Autry faint. The Tom Lehrer-esque "Terminology" is one of my favorites, confirming something many have suspected - that doctors use incomprehensible jargon to baffle patients and justify their high salaries!

"Remember The Days" is another winner, a funny but wistfully nostalgic look back at a doctors' career.

South Bass Island. Put-in-Bay. Learn these names now: you will be hearing them many, many times before this album is over.

If South Bass Island is, as Wikipedia states, the "Key West of Southern Lake Erie", then Michael Kelly Brewer is Southern Lake Erie's answer to Jimmy Buffett. He's got a collection of cheery songs (well, okay, "I Knew You" is kind of a downer) all about island living, escaping the rat race, and getting wasted on that fine Ohio wine. I'm assuming this album was sold in souvenir shops all over the island.

I wasn't able to find any current info about Mr. Brewer, but there's a nice smartass Q&A session with him printed on the back of the jacket. His arranger/producer, Steve Scharren, appears to still be active in music, both as a sound engineer and as a performer.

6 Do You Forget? (5:35)

The packaging of Film Strips come in many shapes and sizes, and can often be mistaken for board games, books, records, or anything else.

I almost passed this box by when picking up piles of film strips from a Thrift Store in Ogden, Utah. It has since turned out to be one of my most favorite finds ever! The sounds of the records themselves could almost be placed along side the works of Ken Nordine, plus one of them even includes an alternate version of a Jean Jacques Perrey & Gershon Kingsley track which I believe to be part of "Barnyard in Orbit" (correct me if I'm wrong).

The filmstrips are great! A couple have been featured in the traveling exhibits of the Lost Media Archive and Incredibly Strange Movie Night. I'll never forget the gasps from the audience during a screening of "Who's Afraid?", which is genuinely creepy even to adults!

365 Days #347 - North High School - Sound Off Saxons (mp3s)

347 MP3:
Fall Semester 1964 (19:24)
Spring Semester 1965 (25:31)

Created as a keepsake for the 1965 graduating class of North High School in Torrance, CA, this album takes you through the school and introduces you to the multiple characters and events there — all with the corniest, dated humor you can imagine.

It's a nice little record of a lost world and ripe for sampling.

The narrator's name is Ralph Lippman.
