Every program on WFMU is a unique mixture of loam and silt, manure and peat, each lovingly tended to to bring the finest harvest of ephemera, flotsam and mixed metaphor that can be guaranteed. In this installment Debbie D explains what makes her garden grow.
For years, station manager Ken had been tossing around the idea of an alternative webstream of the more "Rock 'n' Roll" programs here at WFMU. Dave the Spazz was also a big supporter of the idea. I read on a blog somewhere that Mick Collins, singer of the Gories/Dirtbombs wanted to do a radio show. I emailed Ken and asked him if we could make that happen here at WFMU. He mentioned the alternate Rock stream idea again and I asked why it wasn't already up and running. "We need someone to oversee it" was the reply. And that's how the Ichiban Rock 'n' Soul webstream was started. I liked the idea of short DJ sets from our top 50s & 60s rock 'n' soul jocks mixed in with songs and radio spots from my own record collection.
Scott Williams rounded up the best volunteers we have to edit DJ sets from Downtown Soulville with Mr. Fine Wine and Fool's Paradise with Rex. I also asked Dave the Spazz to give me edited sets of Music To Spazz By that would fit in to the 50s & 60s sinkhole that I was creating. Then, I had to start the process of recording my records to mp3s. This is the most time consuming part of Ichiban. Luckily, there are a million compilation CDs in the WFMU record library that I am able to pull from. I've also pulled obscure records from the blogosphere.
Doron was our tech guru when Ichiban went live. I gave him the songs and he uploaded them to our server. Eventually, he trained me on how to do this from home via the magic of VPN. Now, I have total control of the updates to the stream and can DJ live from my living room. We have hundreds of DJ sets along with 13,000 songs from my collection mixed with weird movie trailers, old radio jingles and station ids. Thanks to Masayo and Rex for the Ichiban ids!
Earlier this year, we were voted number 1 "Greatest Hits" station in new platforms by Radio Info.
