Summer Soulstice Time!

In the 1960's, WLAC DJ, 'Hoss' Allen hosted a television show called The !!!! Beat shot in Dallas, Texas.  He featured all the top RnB and Soul artists of the day, including Otis Redding; Little Milton, Esther Phillips, Joe Tex, Etta James, Lattimore Brown, Rosco Shelton, Carla Thomas, Freddie King, Barbara Lynn, Johnny Taylor, Maurice & The Radiants, Louis Jordan, Mighty Hannibal, Clarence ‘Frogman’ Henry, Robert Parker, Joe Simon, Mitty Collier, Jamo Thomas, ZZ Hill, Lou Rawls, Bobby Hebb, Willie Mitchell, Don Bryant, Ovations, Bar-Kays, Percy Sledge, Garnett Mimms and Sam and Dave.  There were 26 THE !!!! BEAT shows, and many of the performances were live in the studio with a backup band led by Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown.  The good folks at Bear Family Records released every episode in the original master quality DVD format in 2005.  Legend has it that Hoss was too drunk to host one night, so Otis Redding stepped up to the plate.  Here is show # 26 from 1966.

Have you noticed that record stores are going out of style?  Today would be a good day to support your favorite shop because it's Record Store Day.   Hundreds of independently owned record stores across the country are participating by offering discounts and entertainments all day long.  What is your favorite record store that's still open?  I go for Crypt Records in Brooklyn.  But I also must mention Wuxtry Records in Athens, Georgia since that's where I first became a record hound.  Other favorites are Shangri-La Records in Memphis, CD Alley in Chapel Hill and Princeton Record Exchange right here in NJ.  I also wish someone would open a record store called the New Bin.

Opry Almanac

Ralph Emery is the Dick Clark of country music.  His first television show was Opry Almanac, which aired at 6:00 in the morning on WSM-TV in Nashville.  On this particular broadcast in 1966, Ralph's guests were Roger Miller, Thumbs Carlisle, Jerry Allison and Charlie Louvin.  Legend has it that they had been up all night partying before the show...and it shows.  TV was much better back then.  Here's an excerpt.

 

James Brown's FUTURE SHOCK!

Back in the PCP days of the 1970's, James Brown hosted his own television show.  Future Shock was filmed in the pre TBS studios of WTCG in Atlanta.  It could have been lost forever, but a few episodes managed to slip out of the vaults.  Give a great big round of applause to the legendary "Eugene" for editing together the Best Of Future Shock.  And also remember that Future Shock Cannot Be Stopped!

Joe the Grinder is the name of mythical ladies man in blues tunes who seduces the wives and sweethearts of prisoners and soldiers. He’s also known as Joe De Grinder and Joe D. Grinder. The term dates to at least 1939. Grinder is from an old slang verb, to grind, meaning to copulate.
