Live Catch: August 31st-September 6th, 2007

Livecatch Things are slowing down a bit in New York as the summer draws to an end, but there are still some great shows to look forward to over Labor Day weekend and beyond. Here's this week's edition of Live Catch, Beware Of The Blog's guide to live music in WFMU's New York and New Jersey broadcast area.

The summer free concert series at South Street Seaport comes to a close tonight with a terrific bill, Deerhunter and Battles.

Clipse_2 This year's Columbia University back-to-school concert is free, outdoors, and open to the public, unless it rains. So if you wake up on Saturday morning and the sun is shining, head up to their campus at 2pm to catch performances by Neptunes-affiliated rappers Clipse and blogger-favorites Vampire Weekend. Later on Saturday evening, you can catch Acid Mothers Guru Guru--a band featuring members of Acid Mothers Temple and Krautrock legends Guru Guru--at the Mercury Lounge.

On Thursday night at Southpaw in Brooklyn, you can see Bill Callahan (formerly known as Smog) and the Sun City Girls' Sir Richard Bishop.

Live Catch: August 17th-23rd, 2007

Livecatch It's hard to believe we're only a few of weeks away from Labor Day. The summer is drawing to a close, and that means the annual free concert season is just about over. So if you haven't taken advantage of any of New York's outdoor musical events this year, you don't have much time left! To help you decide what to check out, here's Live Catch, our weekly guide to live music in New York and New Jersey. All of the events listed this week are free and al fresco.

Stephenvitiello_2 Tonight over at the South Street Seaport, you can watch a performance by New York-via-Ohio rockers The National.

On Saturday evening at the World Financial Center's Winter Garden, experimental musicians Stephen Vitiello and Molly Berg will debut their new piece "Flutter." The 10 minute long composition will be performed on 100 "small, sound-producing objects" which will be attached to parachutes and dropped from 150 feet in the air.

Oliveros4_2 Sunday afternoon bring what could be the last ever McCarren Park Pool concert. After this summer the pool will finally be restored to its original water-filled glory... if you ask me that's nothing to be depressed about. The final show of the summer will be headlined by dance-rock outfits Ghostland Observatory and Yacht.

On Tuesday night, minimal composer and accordionist Pauline Oliveros will debut a new interactive vocal piece titled Worldwide Tuning Meditation at Lincoln Center's Damrosch Park.
