Today the Bush Administration announced a replacement for outgoing FCC Chairman, Michael Powell. And the winner is...(drumroll): Kevin Martin.
Martin, a republican currently seated on the commission, has a history of siding with FCC tattletales, PTC (Parents Television Council), on many of their failed indecency complaints. In fact, Martin went so far as to offer dissent concerning the FCC's recent decision on the network TV broadcast of Saving Private Ryan. Unlike Powell, Martin won't even tolerate patriotic uses of expletives. His promotion does not bode well for the future of free speech in the U.S., especially considering the recent uproar over Nipplegate, Bono's Golden Globes slip, etc. Moreover, the Bush Administration must now fill Martin's empty seat on the commission with another goon of their choosing. We wait with bated breath.
