MP3s: Zhou Qisheng - "The Model" (thanks, Kenny G) and Zhou Xuan - "One's Young Life Like a Flower" (courtesy of Brian Turner)
Chinese cover of Kraftwerk's "The Model" (MP3), intro includes a chorus of auto engine samples.
Brian Turner submits this Zhou Xuan MP3 of incredibly beautiful sounds from a collection of great 1940's
performances for assorted Shanghai films. Xuan was a beloved,
successful Chinese icon, considered one of the country's premiere golden
voices over the course of more than 100 films. Some interesting English
translations of song titles on the disc: "Servant Girl Hongniang
Is
Ender Interrogation With Torture", "Gather Area Nuts", and "A Flower
Inserted In Garment's Button Whole".
Shanghai Soup anyone? My main fringe benefit at work, these days, is having a co-worker from Shanghai who's enthusiasm for music rivals my own. Plenty o'great tracks of Zhou Xuan (with translations that don't reek of babelfish) are available via a worthwhile navigation from the "Shanghai Soup" homepage.
What, btw, is the title of the "collection of great 1940's performances for assorted Shanghai films"? "Hole in My Heart All the Way To"? What label, etc?
