Complain about it all you want (see comments on this post and this one), but Jack FM has been so succesful that it's now expanding to the Spanish language radio market, rechristening the philosophy of "Play What We Want" as "Toca Lo Que Quiere." Maybe my erstwhile announcer Julio can now get a job. From newradiostar:
Entravision Radio, announced today the launch of 'Jose: Toca lo que Quiere,' the first Spanish-language "Play What We Want" radio format. 'Jose,' who personifies everything heard between the music on the new format, will make his debut on Thursday, October 20th at 3:00 p.m. Pacific Time on KRCX 99.9 FM in Sacramento and at midnight, local time, on KCVR 98.9 FM in Modesto, and KCVR 1570 AM in Stockton, California, KRZY 1450 AM Albuquerque, New Mexico and KMXA 1090 AM Denver, Colorado. 'Jose: Toca lo que Quiere' (he plays what he wants) targets Hispanic adults 25-54. Featuring a mix of Spanish-language adult contemporary hits from the late 1970's to today, 'Jose' will air a wide variety of music from an array of artists, such as Los Bukis, Juan Gabriel, Los Yonics, Rocio Durcal, Los Tigres del Norte, Vicente Fernandez, Los Angeles Negros, Mijares, Alejandro Fernandez and more. "Entravision Radio leads the industry by innovating and creating new Spanish-language radio formats that are just as diverse as the U.S. Hispanic market itself," said Nestor Rocha, Vice President of Programming for Entravision Radio. "We are very excited about the launch of 'Jose' and will continue to create Spanish-language radio formats that accommodate the different tastes of groups within the U.S. Hispanic marketplace."
I like Jack FM. What's wrong with playing a wide variety of music, isn't that what we've always lamented: that commercial radio only plays the same 12 songs over and over?
Seriously, why is Jack FM a problem?

IMHO Jack FM is a problem for me because:
1) They put lots of radio people out of work - replacing hundreds of DJs with that inane "Jack" character.
2) I hate their advertsing. "We Play What We Want". Huh? Who, exactly, are they rebelling against? It's a straw man telling them they can't play the crap they play.
3) That crap they play. I've sampled Jack FM many times while making my way around Manhattan and the music - for the most part - leaves me cold. Everytime I turned it on I landed int he middle of an Aerosmith power ballad.
4) Did I mention that Jack character? That fucking guy's oily patter makes my skin crawl. CRAWL.
And you like Jack because... they play a wide variety? When I want a wide variety from my radio (and I can't pick up WFMU) I switch channels constantly. I do my own goddamn shuffle.

actually, Jack isn't doing so well in NY based on this article from the Star-Ledger last week:
WCBS-FM (101.1 FM), which flipped from oldies to the multi-era hits format called Jack in early June, saw its ratings drop 50 percent with listeners 12 and older in the Arbitron summer ratings book, which was released yesterday.
[...]
Infinity executives have said they have no fixed ratings goal for the station, which may help them explain the precipitous drop. With listeners 25 to 54, Jack dropped from a 3.1 share in the spring to a 1.9.

There's a new Jack station in Austria -- 88,6 in Vienna and Lower Austria. The slogan? "Wir spielen was wir wollen", of course. They take more (and more interesting) requests than most Jack stations, but a huffy dj drew the line at the Dead Kennedys while I was listening last week, saying they'd "spoil the fun" (and then he played some shitty 70s power ballad). They also set a completely bullshit backstory about a staff rebellion, which the press and listeners have bought hook, line, and sinker.

I strongly support Jose Fm, I live in Manteca CA in San Joaquin County, I listen to it every day, they play songs I remember from my past and new songs I listen to today, the bull shit people comment about Jack is just pure wining, and ofcource I listen to Piolin In witch JoseFM does not play in the mornings but in more popular mexican stations, the Name Jose represents a wide viarity of cuntries other than Mexico, Jose is the shape of a common spanish listener in wich represents millinons of common lsteners, so Jose play what he likes I must like.

I have been listening to Jose FM and so far I like what hear. My only complaint is that we don't have the English version of this type of station (Jack FM). I would love to have both. I live in the San Joaquin valley and it gets tiring to have stations playing one genre each. I grew up with AM radio and remember when they played all genres. Radio has been so very boring these last few years just because they want a certain format. I'm all for variety, life is too damn short. I also wish oldie radio stations would play all songs from bands/individuals and not just the hits. We have a rock station that plays the same old crap and some these rock bands have some other worthy music on a CD that is worth listening to.
