Beware of the Blog is a piece of WFMU, and remember, WFMU comes to you from New Jersey, whose self-esteem problems are legendary. So it's occasionally important to remind ourselves what a uniquely wonderful, and yes, weird place NJ is.
To your left is a card my girlfriend and I received in the mail last week. It congratulates us on the birth of our daughter Lila, who was actually born almost 4 months ago, and impels us to immunize . Can you read those signatures? James E. and Dina McGreevey.
Here's a picture of James E. and Dina McGreevey at a press conference in August 2004. In this picture, Dina stands by her man as he resigns as governor of NJ. Jim's mom & dad stand awkwardly by as well, representing the entire state of NJ as they try desperately not to stand in judgement of their Gay American son.
Now you remember Jim! Of course you do, Jim was our governor until August 2004, when he found himself at the center of a gay sex scandal. Believe it or not, that's the kind of thing New Jerseyans are pretty tolerant of. What they despise (largely through simple contemptuous familiarity) is corruption, and Our James E. was putting the object of his affections on the payroll. So Jim had to go, replaced by a temp whose name I bet you have to look up. Jon Corzine takes office in a few weeks, and he promises to start by trimming NJ's governmental fat. Let's hope he doesn't notice these cute little blue cards, such strong symbols of our irrepressible optimism.
You bet we have to look up, Scott? Your search is for Richard Cody. Your Acting Governor, on the other hand, is Richard Codey.
New Jersey's problems are worse than I thought, I see.

Yeah, whatever.

On the other hand, NJ politics could probably use the good ol' fashioned ass-kicking that Richard Cody is likely rarin' to dole out. Up against the wall, @%#$#@!!!

Well, I'm just saying.
If you really want to pose a stumper, see who can name NJ's six governors of the past five years without looking. I'll bet John Farmer didn't bother to take the time to do something as thoughtful as the McGreeveys.
