I just sped-read the Reynolds book from my local library this weekend. I have never seen a rock crit book that was so dedicated to reproducing the mindset of a particular era (and what a particular era it was) and having lived thorough the time as a total nonentity, I'm amazed at how accurate this picture of that neurotic yet creative period was. How astoundingly worried about being correct so many of us were (even crazy Flipper expressed their aspirations in terms of avoidance of traps)! Yet surely there's a benefit to thinking you're making the future, not that I can remember what that would be at this point.
