I've been loving ArtPop's reissue of The Times' I Helped Patrick McGoohan Escape, which is currently dwelling in WFMU's new bin. Yesterday I was searching the web for more information about the band, which was led by Creation Records associate and founding Television Personalities member Edward Ball. TVPs frontman Dan Treacy collaborated on Ball's 1983 single "I Helped Patrick McGoohan Escape" (RealAudio from The Cherry Blossom Clinic) an ode to the star of the classic television series The Prisoner. The song was one of the highlights of last year's Children Of Nuggets box set, and now the entire album is available on CD. I was surprised to find that the top hit in my Google search took me straight to a fantastic Times music video. Check it out!
"I Helped Patrick McGoohan Escape" (16.7 MB Quicktime movie, or via YouTube)
Edward Ball released an earlier version of the song as a single by a precursor to the Times known as the Teenage Filmstars. It's not much different at all.
