You know how after the marathon everyone on the station shuts up and plays music? Ostensibly that's to thank you for your pledges by giving you the freeform radio you love, but it's really because we are so fried that no one can find words like "ostensibly." It took me an extra second or two. OK, longer. Could you stop looking over my shoulder while I type? It just slows me down.
So today, since I'm not cooking up any smut for you, because sometimes smut actually needs words, I'm parking you in front of the TV. Enjoy "Hard Gay Cooking With Kids." Warning: Not suitable for kids.

What's more righteous, more holy, and somewhat more fanatical than the stuff on YouTube? Why, it's GodTube, of course. A window into the world of bad Christian rock, really painful parodies, and bizarre moments of belief, the video sharing site features some of the favorites that Beware of the Blog has already tuned in to: Christian Clown Training, Baby Got Bible, and the infamous Atheist vs Banana speech. But unlike the heathens on YouTube, the content of GodTube is carefully monitored. You won't find the real crazies like the Pentecostal Holy Laughers, Donnie "totally fake" Davies, Rev. Ricky, and the likes of Gene Scott and the Cursing Preacher here. In fact, cursing in general is carefully guarded against on GodTube, as you can tell when you run across automatically censored words like embar!#ing and har^@!.
Still, the site is relatively new, and based on some of the clips I've already found, the future looks promising (other than the whole fact that the end of the world is coming). Here is a short article on how it all got started, and here are some of my favorite GodTube finds:

Yet another "blues" song stemming from the Reagan era.
The industrial backbone of the Mon & Ohio valleys has grown weak and brittle in recent years. As the furnaces cool and the whistles fall silent, more and more workers in the primes of their productive lives find themselves uneasily idle. To 18 year old Mike Pickering of Wellsville, Ohio, the final whistle at the Crucible Steel Division at Midland, Pennsylvania, in October, held a special message.
Mike's uncle, Bob Sullivan, had been a steelworker for 18 years until the Midland MIll shut down. Suddenly, the frustration, the anger and sense of hopelessness that has been haunting the families of steelworkers throughout the Tri-State area hit home hard and Mike's feelings came out in this moving song, "Steel Mill Blues." His uncle shared this song with me for a possible segment on KDKA-TV'S EVENING MAGAZINE. But when I heard it, I knew this was something very special.

Decades before Janet Jackson's halftime wardrobe malfunction sent parts of America into fits of moral outrage, people had to score their righteous indignation at the expense of the publishing industry. The arrival of D.H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterly's Lover on American shores was one of the more famous cases, complete with postal inspectors seizing copies of the pernicious filth and hauling those who would dare sully the fine moral standards of the community by keeping it in their homes off to jail.
The publishers sued to stop this nonsense (and to stay out of jail themselves), leading to a landmark ruling by New York District Court Judge Frederick van Pelt Bryan that defended the book, and all future works with naughty words and adult situations, on the grounds that it had literary merit. America could now freely enjoy the works of Lawrence without fear of their neighbors turning them in to the local police.
What better way to celebrate than with a record dramatizing the novel's steamiest scenes, complete with orchestral accompaniment? Unless you consider “phallus” and “sex” to be obscene words, you'll find yourself quaintly charmed by the idea that this once caused an uproar, even though the anonymous actors do their best to sell the sex with breathless, melodramatic readings.
Both the jacket and the album feature the notation, “Vol. 1,” on all sides, suggesting that this was the first in a series. As the album covers the entire plot of Lady Chatterly's Lover, I must assume that they never found another piece of adult-oriented literature worthy of adaptation.

Walter Tetley was a prolific character actor in the media of film, radio and animation for many years. Like thousands of others I enjoyed his appearances in old movies, his cartoon voice work and his steady comedy roles on golden age radio. The thing was, I thought I was enjoying three different people. It took many years for me to figure out that the anonymous bellhop in countless Hollywood films was the same guy I was hearing on Stan Freberg comedy records.
Walter Tetley had the voice of a pre-pubescent schoolboy. Born with a rare hormonal disease that prevented him from fully experiencing the changes that puberty normally brings, Tetley's voice is best remembered today as the bespeckled cartoon nerd Sherman, boy companion to Mister Peabody on The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show. Many would surely be surprised to discover that the brainiac dog's boy companion in all ninety-one segments of Peabody's Improbable History was actually a man in his late forties.

I knew you could!
This is the fourth of a group of 7" singles I found at a yard sale (the others being Caprice Capers, Sigma 7 and The Triumph of Man). This one wasn't in a sleeve--I haven't tested its unbreakability, but it is evidently highly scratchable. And it's on red, see-through vinyl, which, frankly, doesn't seem very Christian to me.
Anyway, I haven't been able to find much info on Barth and Smith, Happy-Time Records or Singspiration, but what I have found indicates the label operated from the mid '40s through the early '60s. I've found multiple references to "Happy All the Time," some with different lyrics or title (a division of the Hong Kong Girl Guide Association has a version of the lyrics called "Inside Outside" that replaces Jesus with Guiding, which "took away all pain"), so I doubt this is the origin of the song. And I've found no references to "The Numbering Song," but hell, it's only the B-side.

The Mp3.com "Internet Radio Stations" were really playlists with options to "play all" or download selected tracks. My Mp3.Com Internet radio station "The Ed Wood Zone" came into existance one afternoon in August of 2000, when I typed the name "Tor Johnson" into the Mp3.com search engine. I have no idea why I did. I like to think I'm not the kind of guy who types "Tor Johnson" into a search engine apropos of nothing, but maybe I am. To my amazement, it turned out that someone on Mp3.com had actually written and recorded a song with that title. I fed more Ed Wood-related names and titles into the search engine, and continued getting hits. Two different "Grave Robbers from Outer Space!" Two different "Orgies of the Dead"! Within an hour I had assembled about a dozen songs, which became the first version of "The Ed Wood Zone."

Mary Weiss, the original lead singer of the fantastic girl group The Shangri-Las, has released a solo album
after 40 years of retirement. Our very own DJ Dave the Spazz co-wrote one of the songs with man-about-town Andy Maltz. Her backing band is one of my favorite rock 'n' roll bands, The Reigning Sound, featuring WFMU's Dave Amels aka DA the DJ on organ. The band made their television debut this week on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Check it out on youtube. If you stayed up late enough to watch the show, you may have caught a glimpse of the Spazz sitting behind the house band clapping like a chimp after a commercial break! Dig an MP3 of Nobody Knows (But I Do) Here and pick up the album Dangerous Game on Norton Records.

Despite what certain press-credentialed sourpusses have said, WFMU DJs are really just like you, and also puppies: we totally get off on reward-based training models. Take the Marathon for instance - two full weeks of straining ourselves to the breaking point for another year's operating budget demands a little Work-Hard-Play-Harder payoff. So this Sunday night, we're all getting wasted. On the air, and also while singing. Only we dignify it with a name: The Hoof & Mouth Sinfonia
It used to be we'd ask some band to come down here and play during our Marathon Finale party - bands such as X-Girl, Planet Filly, and the Loser's Lounge Tribute to Queen spring to mind immediately. Then, for some reason, a kinda large group of us began frequenting a certain karaoke hotspot in Chinatown, and a previously submerged area of our egos was aroused. The instant gratification! The applause! The lights, the glamour and the liquor! Boy, it sure wasn't like radio.
Then (March 2001), someone (who was it anyway?) decided a live band karaoke thing would be the way to end the Marathon, and this idea has proven so durable that we ain't quit it yet. Seven years and counting, and it's been my total thrill to be bandleader all that time.
This Sunday night, March 18th, we shall once again unleash upwards of 35 WFMU DJs, all hopped up on courage, upon you the person with ears, and even eyes if you've got yourself a fast internet connectio
n. Indulge me: The Hoof & Mouth Will Be Televised, right here, and on the air, starting up at 7pm and running til we drop. Hopefully that means about midnite.

Dick Sparks (Richard W. Sparks) was the featured organist on Esquivel's final album in 1966, The Genius of Esquivel. Previously, he had played with Esquivel for nearly ten years in Las Vegas. Dick performed with a Hammond B3 and Grand piano, often playing both at once.
Donna Sparks got her start in a band called the Hank Dominco Quartet. The band never released any music on any label. They did, however, make at least one home recording off the radio from an appearance on a W.E.L.D. radio broadcast. When appearing on stage with her husband, Donna sang and played percussion.
Here featured is a mix of live lounge/supper recordings (some broadcast live on local radio), and home recordings.
