If you are in NYC you must check out the Andreas Gursky show at the Matthew Marks Gallery (link). Gursky has taken his obsession with crowds to a whole new level: North Korea.
On display are two giant images from a series of photographs Gursky took in Pyongyang. Every year the North Korean government packs the May Day Stadium with 80,000 gymnasts who perform against a backdrop of 10,000 children who hold colored flip-cards. Breathtaking, terrifying and beautiful.
That's a bit strange-- I saw the show on opening day, and this image was not up on that day. They must have substituted it for another sometime between now and then. Hmmm maybe it was still at the printer.

The card flipping is called "Arirang Mass Games"; that annoying slob from vbs.tv (Vice Magazine's online video outfit) was able to see a practice performance by himself, it's in the "Vice Guide to North Korea" series of films at vbs.tv.
