It's Friday and that means it's time for another installment of Live Catch, your weekly guide to musical happenings in the New York and New Jersey area. Tonight brings a trio of free shows to the city. Neko Case plays at Central Park SummerStage with ex-Archers Of Loaf leader and skilled Neil Diamond impersonator Eric Bachman. Dirty Projectors play at the Whitney Museum, and Bishop Allen headline a bill at the South Street Seaport. Also this evening, Marissa Nadler plays with a whole bunch of other artists over at the Lutheran Church of the Messiah.
Since this is the final summer of Astroland Amusement Park's tenure at Coney Island, this year's Siren Festival will be the last one ever. The free two-stage free concert will take place on Saturday and will be headlined by M.I.A. and the New York Dolls. Also on Saturday, punk/pop genius Jay Reatard plays at the Bowery Ballroom and FMU favorites Fucked Up and Pissed Jeans play at Southpaw in Brooklyn.
Sunday brings another free show to McCarren Park Pool, this time with Band Of Horses and Oxford Collapse.
Earth, one of the most influential stoner metal bands ever, play in town twice this week. They'll take the stage on Tuesday at the Bowery Ballroom and on Wednesday at the Luna Lounge. The great Kurtis Blow and DJ Grand Wizzard Theodore (the inventor of scratching) play a free show on Wednesday at Crotona Park in the Bronx. Also on Wednesday, Talibam! will play at the new Issue Project Room and M.I.A. will play at Studio B in Greenpoint.
On Thursday night Sharon Jones And The Dap-Kings play their umpteenth free show of the summer at Castle Clinton, and Matthew Bower brings his blissful drones to the Issue Project Room with a solo Sunroof! performance as well as a set from his group Hototogisu.
