Welcome summertime with a simple Goodtime Party - which I believe involves motorcycling around the pool and hanging out in loose fitting bikinis. Ask R. Stevie Moore if he remembers those "goodtime parties", because this album is from his dad, Nashville session musician Bob Moore. So you don't get caught up in all the nostalgia and forget what this day is really about, don't miss this American jingoism! I wanna eat. American. Sleep. American. Weep. American!!! You just can't beat patriotic cheese for the Fourth of July. Take that, rest of the world. Especially all you Chinese Cowboys!
But in order to help you be a true patriot, you really need the ultra-tacky original 12 " mixes of James Brown's "Living In America".
Better yet, forget about the bogus patriotism and go rogue with some moody broody rocking pirates from 1959. Spread the Good Word does just that with a few from Johnny Kidd and the Pirates. Give a listen to "Please Don't Touch", then check out the updated version by Motorhead.
You know who really knows about "The Long And Winding Road"? Wile E. Coyote, of course. That sort of mash-up fun is great and all, but what would happen if you took the repetitious song from Moon Patrol (the video game), add clips from Rocky and Bullwinkle, and top it off with a house beat? You get the horrible music they used to play in the mall at those cheesy places that sold scrunchies and stuff. Heck with that, just grab the real Bullwinkle soundtrack instead.
And, on the kiddie tip, a while back, we found a post of the storybook record for Kaptain Kool and the Kongs (house band of the Krofft Supershow). Well, now a benevolent blogger has gone and posted their actual music L.P.
More of this week's MP3s after the jump.
Also in the music blog world this week:
- Garage Hangover takes a long look at The Cranabeats.
- KBD keeps it pounding with an e.p. of short songs by Australian art-punks Seems Twice. But even better are the two simple songs by The Hollywood Squares. A good rule of thumb: pretty much any punk song about the Hillside Strangler is worth a listen.
- Some early demos from Suicide.
- Here's a lovely German oddity, The Tanzdiele. I have to agree that the b-side "Candy" is pretty darn good. NDW ist qualitatsware (Pigeon German, there. Sorry).
- Take a listen to the ladies of early rap - Sugarhill style!
- Another sort of Brazilian revival needs to happen, and Crud Crud has the proof in Santiago Penando Estas.
- Speaking of Crud Crud, he posted this found acetate, which frankly scares the crap out of me.
- Death Wears White Socks offers up some lovely tracks from the soundtrack of the original Wicker Man (and a photo of perhaps the most unintentionally hilarious moment in the film).
- Remember when symphonic disco was all the rage in R&B? Yeah, Bizarre.
- Don't miss out on a true original...the vanity recordings of Joe E. Neubauer.
- And I don't know about the music, but album cover of the week definitely goes to Pat Kelly's Lonely Man.
