Good morning, people! We're back with another savory gallimaufry of musical tidbits courtesy of WFMU's insanely long list of myspace music buddies. If you missed the first post in this series, here's the basic gist: Listen to the song. Check out the profile, if you want. Then vote!
The band or bands who get the most "Pump it" votes each week will be forever exalted in the form of my FIRST EVER MARATHON PREMIUM called "In MySpace, No One Can Hear You Scream", which will be offered during WFMU's 50th Anniversary fundraising Marathon (starting February 25th!!). With the artists' gracious permission, the winning tracks from the 1st portion of this year will be compiled onto one CD, packaged lovingly, and mailed to your home in exchange for some dosh for the station's perilously emaciated coffers. So far we have The Toblerones, fronted by everyone's favorite WFMU prodigy (all growed up and channeling the Velvet Underground).
Who will be next??? It's up to you!!!
"Heidi Was Never Good" by HotChaCha (Cleveland, Ohio rockin ladies)
"Body Automatic" by Mixel Pixel (Brooklyn-based combo previously heard on WFMU on Bethany's, David Suisman's, and Trent's shows, the video for this song was posted by Station Manager Ken way back when.)
"Feed the Ghost" by The Wiggins (Houston TX "Glam/Garage/Pop" band currently consisting of one Jon Read.)
"Psycho on your Side" by Your 33 Black Angels (New York-based band who are influenced by "the wonderful inventors and craftsmen who made our instruments")
"Sex Drugs and Theory" by Lichtzwang (This duo from Cologne, Germany categorize their music as "Other/Other/Other")
"Let Me" by Mary Bragg (Folk rock/ Americana/ Pop singer hailing from the small town of Swainsboro, GA)
"Mystical Beat" by The Steeds (Psychedelic Garage rock from the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania previously heard on WFMU's Teenage Wasteland hosted by Bill Kelly.)
"Fraktur" by Crash Diet Crew (This Brooklyn-based outfit recently played live on Michael Goodstein's Choking on Cufflinks show.)
"Sheafman" by Ex-Cocaine (This heavy-folk duo from Montana also graced the presence of the WFMU Live studios, for Bill Zurat's fine programme.)
"Buffalo" by Tom Bone Jenkins (The pride of the Hudson Valley, New York, Tom says he sounds like "Baroque Rock/B- Movie Themes/Surf/Psychedelic Folk/Songpoems/Instrumental")

Buffalo by Tom Bone Jenkins is the only thing here worth a damn!! Everything else is overproduced and slicked-out!!
Posted by: SNAFT | February 08, 2008 at 09:47 PM
oh poor Snaft...sorry, but did you really listen? you couldn't be any more wrong about some...I personally know one band recorded their whole album for less than 500 bucks...
anyway, cool contest! when do we find out the next winner(s)?
thanks...

Hey SNAFT!! Don't say that! Yu're embarrassing me! You're crazy SNAFT!! Sorry folks about SNAFT's rude comment.....
Posted by: tom bone jenkins | February 10, 2008 at 11:23 PM
$500? That's an outrage! THE SNAFT is 100% right! I would give 10 lbs of marzipan to here a few more from Tom Bone Jenkins! The rest of them all kind of suck. JMO
Posted by: Blubber Glaze | February 11, 2008 at 08:33 AM
Now now, no need to be mean. I have a naughty step and I'm not afraid to put you on it, Blubby and Snafty.
Posted by: Megan | February 11, 2008 at 11:04 AM
I agree with THE SNAFT. The truth does hurt sometimes, but lets all be honest. But marzipan? and "here" instead of "hear"? I don't get that Blubber Glaze.
How does the mediocre garbage get to compete with the Jenkins stuff? THE SNAFT's comments are right on the money. I'm sure the voting is corrupted. I would like to see the actual number of votes. Perhaps some stacking may be involved?!?!?!?!?

I gotta say, I think THE STEEDS tune is right on. Good, solid, seemingly simple garage stuff...bringin back a quite nice 60's vibe. Refreshing.

GBV, after your comment, I gave the steeds a second listen....I could see your point if it weren't so "Mel Bay Book 1". It's still awful.

yeah, great more 60's based rock?? didnt this burn out in the 70's and again in 2003?

There is NO rock music today that isn't reminiscent of something... most of the comments on here seem fairly unfounded and irritatingly negative and rude. That's ashame.
We all have different tastes, and maybe some of the musicians are not your cup-a-tea, but come on, have some class whether it's your bag or not. Variety is the spice of life... be thankful for contests like this which allow for those differences. cheers.

Your right.. We always build of the past.. but I just think its funny that it(indie pop sound) keeps going back to the 60's.. baby boomers.. when will it end?
Posted by: kane | February 14, 2008 at 02:51 PM
very interesting discussion going o here....just how "amateur" is this contest? most of you are like accountants on your lunchbreak talkin' music....get outta here and go back to kissin' ass for a living!!
Posted by: J.T. Gurley | February 15, 2008 at 10:13 PM
well, well... listen to Mr. Rock n Roll J.T. Gurley. Please, enlighten the "part-time music peasants" with your non-ass kissin', out of control, livin' on the edge of the brink of music, self. Wait, you probably don't have the time... with organizing your Sonics vinyl, tuning up your hipster '57 Guild, renewing your subscription to Mojo mag., and doing everything music oriented us amateurs could only dream of.

Marshall....your an ass.
JT I'm quitting my job tomorrow!
You're all losing the point of Pump it or Dump it.
I shouldn't curb my opinions "to be nice" or "understanding of different tastes". If it sucks to me, I'm sorry, it sucks.
Same can be said for my career choices, (by the way I get my ass kissed, not the other way around...I'm the boss!) just because I'm successful in life doesn't mean I can't have an appreciation for music beyond all the commercialized bullshit out there.
All that being said, I personally would hope for an honest opinion of my work/music whatever, so I could take it in a new direction if it sucks. I would rather that than people feigning support so my feelings don't get hurt. If I saw a big old "Dump it" I would appreciate the critisism and move in a new direction.
Perhaps if I'm a Mel Bay Book One, shallow, no talent, I should take that career a little more seriously.

Just because the Steeds song sucks doesn't mean its bad.
Maybe that's what they were going for.

did Spanky just say, "I would take my song in a new direction if it sucks"...?? and, "if I saw a big 'ole dump it, I would move in a new direction" ? you would change what you're doing depending on what people thought? Spanky, your ridiculousness is a no-brainer. you're extremely laughable.. please stop now, we're begging you!
Also, you constantly keep making your May Bay Book One reference. The Steeds sound hardly this. And anyway, just because something's "simple" doesn't mean it's bad. There's thousands of examples of this.
I like the Steeds song, and it appears that most people do too... I thought you'd like to know this...because according to your convoluted "dump" logic, bands should change if they're being "dumped." Maybe The Steeds should stay the same since they are getting the opposite votes? Then again, YOU might believe, according to what you said, that they are getting too "commercialized" with their popularity here. See what I mean. Again, you really have to stop before your levity becomes overbearing to all.
Please stop this madness before it snowballs too far, and no one will be able to save you from yourself. Thanks. Now enjoy.......
And by the way, congratulations on your booming career. :-)

Thank you Daron, you're right. Crappy musicians should be encouraged to fill the world with mediocre junk. Let's encourage them to stay the coarse and squander other opportunities in lieu of a lucrative music career. Constructive critisism is, and always has been an oxymoron.
Thanks again for setting me straight big guy.
Yours truly,
SMG
