(Photo: Adam Scott) To usher in the end of WFMU's 50th Anniversary year (and two years of free NYC shows we've been involved with), we're happy to announce the latest upcoming WFMU Free Concert Series event, and one we're producing fully: Wire will be playing at the Fillmore at Irving Plaza in Manhattan on October 9th, and we'll be broadcasting it live over WFMU's radio and netwaves. While most of you probably don't need a primer, suffice to say that Wire has been an essential purveyor of oft-imitated, never-replicated genius artpunk since their 1977 inception and continued through the decades with an extensive discography to inspire us heavily (as a WFMU airplay search can attest). We can't think of a better closer to this series of shows that so far has included Sonic Youth, the Feelies, DJ/Rupture, Jonathan Kane's February, Flaming Fire, the Major Stars, Oneida, Alan Vega, Simply Saucer, and Old Time Relijun at assorted events (again, all free to the public). And don't forget there's still one more on the way before this show: a WFMU/Lincoln Center collaboration that will see the NYC premiere of the Ex and Gétatchèw Mèkurya together, plus added acts Extra Golden and Either/Orchestra with Mahmoud Ahmed and Alèmayèhu Eshèté. More on that show (August 20th at Damrosch Park in Manhattan) here.
We're going to offer advance free tickets for the Wire event starting September 3rd, available during store hours at Other Music (15 E. 4th Street, Manhattan) with a limit of two per person, while supplies last. More info as we get closer (as well as announcement of special guest opener), if tickets do not vanish at Other Music there may be some at the venue night of show, but we'll keep you all posted here and on air whether that happens or not. Hope you can make it to our final 50th Anniversary free show! And to get you primed:
"One of Us" (Real Audio) and "Circumspect" (Real Audio) from Wire's brand new Object 47.
"23 Years Too Late" (Real Audio) from 2007's Read and Burn 3.
"Agfers of Kodak" (Real Audio) from 2003's Send.
And a classic (which I was happy to hear in a recent set this year):
Horrible!
