They came from all over the place, more specifically- Melbourne, and San Francisco. They are Skybombers, and Apache, two bands on a collision course that met up in Jersey City on Terre T's Cherry Blossom Clinic last Saturday! Here is the link to the playlist, and alongside is a pic of Skybombers guitarist Hugh Gurney and drummer Scottie McMurtrie giving it up in WFMU's live (love!) room.
First up was Skybombers--looking like teens, playing like dynamos. They blasted through a set of six tunes that rocked, popped and powered those in the studio to stand up and cheer! Playing a set of tunes off both their releases: Sirens EP, & the Take Me To Town CD produced by Rick Parker (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Dandy Warhols), Samuel, Ravi (together pictured right), Hugh and Scott put everything into their amazing set in the WFMU studios - so energized that I really wished I would have had the opportunity to see them play live in a club! Those of you who saw them that evening at The Saint in Asbury Park, let us know, would love to hear how their last set in the States went!
After a brief changeover, Apache from San Francisco (guitarist Mark pictured at right) took the Love Room by the throat playing seven of their brand of glammed out tunes to give WFMU a double shot of home court advantage radio. They have a cd called Boomtown Gems out on the Birdman label - we've got it in rotation in
the WFMU new bin right now, but the songs sounded much meatier live. Two members of the Electric Shadows joined them for the last song (10 to 99), and together it sounded like Johnny
Thunders meeting Alice Cooper for drinks back in the good old days before Alice Cooper got a hold of a golf club! The cacaphony is pictured below-- I can only assume a good time was had by all; it took Terre and me what seemed like hours to clean up the decimated room, being that body parts and instruments were exploding left and right; I hope all the bands made it home intact! We found an extra spleen, a walking stick, some cheese and a whole lot of notoriety left in the room. Check out the sounds on Terre's broadcast
here in RealAudio and here in MP3 format. And for anyone who just wants a taste, here are mp3s of the following songs: On and On performed by Skybombers from that session can be found here, Apache playing Crystal Clear can be found here.
