If you missed the announcement a couple of days ago, today is George Jones' 77th birthday. On your left is an ad for what is most likely the weirdest George Jones souvenir ever produced: a deluxe Winchester rifle commemorating his 50th anniversary in the world of show biz.
Please hoist a beverage in his honor this evening. And speaking of imbibing, here are a couple of classic George Jones drinking tunes to get things started.
George Jones - Relief Is Just A Swallow Away (2:24, MP3)
George Jones - Wino The Clown (3:50, MP3)
I just saw George Jones in person last night at Logan's in Cool Springs. He sure looks good for 77.

What? No cocaine jokes? I recall watching Jones on Nashville Now (hosted by some egomaniac ex-DJ who deserves no mention) and being amazed at George's stories of the robot that sat on his shoulder while he was coked up and paranoid.

You guys are famous at coming up with odd ball or weird stuff.Wondering if anybody has anything on Jones singing in the duck voice or talking like the duck and old man.

At a time when George Jones is joining people like Barbara Streissand, Benny Goodman, Paul Newman, Pavarotti, Leonard Bernstein and the like in becoming an Honor recipient (The Honors ceremony is one of the highlights in the culural life of the United States - the annual addition of Honors recipients charts the international standards of excellence set by American artists)it would seem you guys could think of more inspiring things to say about the great George Jones. To allow a damn rifle to be issued in his honor at this time is also amongst the worst personal judgement ever displayed by a public figure.
To me George's music for many years was the absolute best of what country music was all about and I loved this music. Now that he is being honored in almost (yes Roy Acuff was so honored as well) an unprecedented fashion it would seem to me more inspiring thoughts could be caled to mind at this time.
