If you're like millions of Americans (myself included), then weight loss tops your list of New Year's Resolutions. Here's a little motivation, courtesy of the President's Council for Physical Fitness, circa 1981.

Each of these fitness-encouraging public service announcements revolves around a member of the family sharing good fitness news or resolving a crisis with Mother Fitt, who seems to be getting closer to a nervous breakdown with each successive track. With a grandfather who struts around town in his pajamas, a husband who's working out with "that cute Miss Willoughby," a son who's name nobody can remember (he's referred to as both Frankie and Freddy), and a daughter who can't get a date, who can blame her?

Production credit goes to Lowengard and Brotherhood. Jerry Lowengard ran an agency that specialized in political ads, so the writing and production is a cut above most PSAs, even if they simply sped up the intro track to make it fit a 30-second spot. "Team Spirit" is the most flagrant example.

Love, The Mastery Of... Kofi Ghanaba (Guy Warren) [MP3s]

Just a brief word acknowledging the brilliant and beloved master percussionist Kofi Ghanaba (Guy Warren), who died last week at the age of 85. Born Kpakpo Akwei in Accra, Ghana, in May 1923, his family was fascinated by America and his name was changed to Warren Gamaliel Akwei (in homage, one imagines, to U.S. president Warren Gamaliel Harding, who died suddenly two months after Akwei was born.) At the age of 14, performing now under the name Guy Warren, he played drumset in the Accra Rhythmic Orchestra and then a few years later in the legendary highlife outfit the Tempos, both with future trumpet star E.T. Mensah.

By the mid-'50s, Warren was living in the States and jamming with the likes of Lester Young, Thelonious Monk and other titans of modern music, becoming one of the earliest musicians from the continent to introduce African folkloric traditions to jazz. At first it was received mostly as a gimmick. Max Roach, who would begin incorporating African rhythms and percussion into his music in the early 1960s once remarked that Warren "was so far ahead of what we were all doing, that none of us understood what he was saying — that in order for African-American music to be stronger, it must cross-fertilize with its African origins." But as roots consciousness began to have an appeal in Black American culture, the real value of Warren's contributions became increasingly celebrated.

Before returning to Ghana (and taking the name Kofi Ghanaba, meaning "son of Ghana" in the Ga language) Warren released a number of highly influential percussion-based recordings like African Speaks, America Answers, which had a profound effect on American jazz musicians hungry for authentic African sounds. Randy Weston and Art Blakey both recorded cover versions of Warren's "Love, the Mystery Of," his musical rendering of Romeo and Juliet that was featured on the 1958 recording Themes for African Drums, which is provided here for download via the Soundological Investigations blog:

Otomo Yoshihide: Without Records

This past summer, Japanese noise artist/turntablist and Ground Zero founding member Otomo Yoshihide collaborated with a group of installation artists at the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media for an exhibit called Ensembles (here's an interview with Yoshihide about the show). One of the grooviest pieces in the exhibit was "without records", which filled a room with 100 portable record players and left them running, you know, without records. It's a nice rumination on the loss of vinyl, and the unique sound that turntables have to offer - something that can't be said of digital music.

Just in time to serve as a cautionary tale for New Year's Eve, here is an MP3 that is specially tailored to scare the shit out of you and persuade you not to reach for the car keys after hitting the bottle.  Unless, of course, you're not particularly disturbed by the possibility that, while driving around drunk, you'll run over and kill two of your own children, which is exactly what happens to the narrator of this gruesome tune.

The best known version of this song is probably the one cut by Ferlin Husky for Capitol Records in 1954.  I'm not really sure if the Harley Ford version featured here came before or after Ferlin's recording.   A third version also exists.  Ricky Skaggs recorded the song and released it on an album that came out in 1997.

Evan "Funk" Davies's Best of 2008

As is the case every year, this list is based first on a computerized analysis of my playlists from the past year, during which I note how frequently I played songs from the different releases that came out over the past 12 months; and second, on my subsequent re-arrangement of those computerized results based on how much I actually liked everything. Disnelyand Dream named to The National Film Registry

The Library of Congress's National Film Registry has a mandate to preserve "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant films." It is an exclusive club that few films belong to. Well, now a home movie has been added to the list: Robbins Barstow's 1956 Disneyland Dream. The Home & Amateur blog explains, "The Barstow family films a memorable home movie of their trip to Disneyland. Robbins and Meg Barstow, along with their children Mary, David and Daniel were among 25 families who won a free trip to the newly opened Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., as part of a ‘Scotch Brand Cellophane Tape’ contest sponsored by 3M.  Through vivid color and droll narration (”The landscape was very different from back home in Connecticut”), we see a fantastic historical snapshot of Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Catalina Island, Knott’s Berry Farm, Universal Studios and Disneyland in mid-1956." I am big. It's the bank accounts that got small

All around us year-end lists are summing up our collective experiences in an orderly fashion, reminding us of the things we missed or challenging us to change our minds about what we didn't.  The last dark day of December is not radically different from the new gray light of January 1st.  We wear the same clothing, eat the same out of season foods and continue to seek out places to put the holiday gifts that have recently entered our lives.   

     I've been thinking a lot about Billy Wilder's 1950 film Sunset Boulevard lately.  Gloria Swanson plays an aging silent film star who is trying to craft a comeback.  A young and near destitute screenwriter stumbles into her life and she takes him under her wing; dressing him, housing him, and hoping for his love in return.

   The butler (played by Erich Von Stroheim) is her former silent film director.  In his devotion he attempts to construct an artificial reality that shields her from the success of talkies and the end of the silent era.  Our heroine can't see she is outmoded and lives that fantasy even as it self-destructs.  Some of her most famous lines ("I am big. Its the pictures that got small") ring with a freaky simultaneity as we end two thousand and great with an odd paradigm shift.  The themes of obfuscation and denial, obsolescence and confusion: the similarities between this film and our present economic meanderings are staggering.

     Fast forward 58 years and we, a nation of spenders, are running out of petty cash.  This year something very different was added to the year end mix that hasn't been fully digested.  What do we do about a lack of money?  Not just a 'I get paid next Friday' lack of funds, but a 'hmmmm, perhaps we need to fully re-evaluate our lifestyle' kind of lack.  For decades, December has been a make or break profit month for American retail.  Some businesses make up to one third of their yearly figures in this holiday shopping period.  But now that the whole idea of job security, an evergreen stock market, and safe savings has been re-fashioned, do we make a quick return to the Waltons era of hand made dolls and slingshots on the first night of Hannukah?

     When I was a child the number of presents under the Christmas tree was always nearly half the height of the tree.  My parents spent heavily on a credit card that they mistakenly empowered with the task of soothing emotional scars from their difficult childhoods.  Christmas became a symbol of giving that signified how much you loved.  Perhaps many children who grew up with post World War II and Baby Boomer parents received the present of excess to make up for loss.  But now it is the excess that has created the loss.  The loss of meaning except for a price tag, has created a culture of shopping as a hobby, shopping as a past time, shopping to show how much you shop!

Recent Faves from the New Bin

Modern day hardcore bands namedropping Void, Negative Approach and Die Kreuzen automatically throw down the money-where-your-mouth-is gauntlet, so when Austin's Total Abuse does all that and then the singer talks about how he likes to hide behind a wall of power electronics noise and intone to the audience dictator-like, I am skeptical. But with the new weed of HC bands like Fucked Up and Sex Vid (covering the Dead C for heavens sake) the combo of select history lessons in sound vs. conceptual rulebook out the window can't be anything but a kool and welcome cardioshock to the genre. Deranged Records' comp of Total Abuse's LP/7" and demos doesn't quite yield the Black Flag-meets-Whitehouse vibe that's been hinted (I haven't seen them live), but the off-the-rails HC destruction (esp. the smoking demos) has made me a huge fan. They are powerful, fast and noisy as hell and the singer's yowl does me just fine; and calling a track "Banned In Austin" might be funny, but sure doesn't sound like a joke.    "Eastern Thoughts" (MP3),     "Writing On the Wall" (MP3)

Crazy Dreams Band is the full-on rock outing of Ms. Lexie Mountain, who in the last several years has been the proprietress of one amazing stoned communal public patty-cake session with a rotating cast of ladies she calls her Boys. The CDB's self-titled debut for Holy Mountain finds Ms. Mountain somewhat of an equal leader of a tribe of clamoring sounds instead of free-association voices, and while many people are pointing to Royal Trux as a reference, it all sounds like a less-Euro, mudpit-wallowing Catherine Ribiero fronting a proggier Torch of the Mystics-era Sun City Girls. With someone totally unfraid to put the keyboard settings on "80's". Lexie's croon is magnificent in its melodic setting; there's still a lot of improvisation within the band (which includes Nate from Mouthus/Religious Knives) that allows her to take some flights of fancy, but hearing a much more "composed" element to her singing is a great thing I hope we have some more of in the future.    "Separate Ways" (MP3)

Speaking of falling between cracks, two great reissues this year: D.N.E.'s 47 Songs Humans Shouldn't Sing (Room 40) finally digitizes a limited-edition 1988 LP run by Australian visual artist Eugene Carchesio and is a cool assortment of colorful audio miniatures done with basic sax, guitar, and percussion assemblages. Not quite no-wave, not really jazz, it's simply a nice flow of sharp Venusian blues sketches that runs the gamut from heartfelt Derek Bailey plonk to the Microscopic Sextet stumbling down a French Quarter alley chased by Robert Quine. Not many heard this, but hopefully now more will.

On the other hand, quite a few people heard the all-instrumental trio Gore in the mid to the late 1980's blasting out of Holland, but not enough people took the rulebook their laid down serious enough. Well, the Melvins did for sure, probably Godflesh too. They slotted themselves firmly alongside European tours of luminaries like the Butthole Surfers, Sonic Youth, Big Black, even charmed early Swans, and seemed destined for big things. Their Albini-engineered 1989 LP and split with Rollins Band probably netted them the most attention stateside, but the awesome Hart Gore was the slayer and thanks to Southern Lord's new 2LP/2CD reissue (tacking on Mean Man's Dream) you can not only hear how well these guys aged, but how totally ahead of their time they were. Hard-as-tacks percussion over muzzy/mathy Sabbath/St Vitus guitar workouts seem just what might be expected of a lot of the new heavies these days, but so few got it as right as Gore. Tons of bonus material added on, totally essential stuff.

The Death of the Drive-in to the Death of VHS... to the Internet.

It is with slight trepidation that I link to things like this but it gave me a lot of happiness this week and almost seemed too good to be true. Cultrarare (as in Cult + Ultra Rare) is a website devoted to sharing full length exploitation pictures that were released on VHS back in the medium's infancy when videos were contained in colossal puffy cases and, unless you were a millionaire, you had to rent a VCR to view your movie. The webmaster seems to have been a devotee of some small town goldmine of a video store and cleaned up when they either went out of business or when they did the switchover to DVD. All the films on his site are easy to download and the legalities of it all are more or less legit, not so much because all the titles are in the public domain, but because the majority were released by low-budget outfits to begin with and nobody cared about most of the films when they were released let alone three decades later.

Several hard to find films that I've been searching for are here. Country music exploitation like Nasvhille Girl (1976) and the rare Peter Fonda/Jerry Reed trucker film High Ballin' (1978) were highlights for me as were the plethora of pictures belonging to odd genres like that of "wild packs of dogs attack" and some "Bigfoot exploitation."

The site also features plenty of rare 1970s television movies, some super obscure Russ Meyer and a behind the scenes VHS tape of the 1980 Cannes Film Festival with Dudley Moore. The forgotten mom and pop video store of the internet is yours to explore here.

*Note that it can take some time for a film to download (it does for me anyway), so your best bet is to download several at the same time to make it worth your while as it takes an equal amount of time to download fifteen at once as it would to download one. Right click on the "Download Now" bar for the movie you wish to have and save it to your computer as opposed to double clicking on the same spot.

Two Lumps of Coal for you Swine!

JK LOL, a truly blessed time to you and yours in this most special of seasons. OK, that just sounded sarcastic. Maybe I'm a bit bitter since this is the first Christmas I've EVER had to spend away from family and friends. But come to think of it, given my family, this might be a good thing. At least I'll be able to watch Lee Han Joo perform tonight. I guess he's a good replacement for the obligatory weird uncle in every family.

Regardless, it's true that these videos here are, technically speaking, lo-fi lumps of coal. On the left is a wild TV performance from Jagatara. I'm not really sure what's going on, but I do know that the punk rocker who seizes the mic and screams is none other than Sakevi of GISM fame. At first it seems like he's just rushing the stage, but the backup singers don't miss a beat so it's not really clear for a while whether the chaos is intentional. Definitely the sort of stage presence that deserves lo-fi tape quality though. On the right is a 1986 performance from German thrashers Kreator.

Next thursday look out for an mp3 laden scene report on Richmond, Virginia! But for now, more coal - a public access set with weird graphics from Government Issue, and trashed out footage of a No Comment set at Gilman Street.

Wonderful and Obscure Christmas Stuff, Part Three (MP3)

Today, I'm offering up a uniquely odd translation of "A Visit From St. Nicholas", aka "'Twas the Night Before Christmas", as read by yours truly, at a party a few years ago.

For the last several years, I have been amusing myself, and certain friends and acquaintances, by taking the lyrics of songs, and running them through my favorite internet translation website. The results can be hilarious, mystifying, touching or downright strange. The path I use is English to German to French to Italian to Spanish to Italian to French to German to English. Sometimes words get "stuck" in another language, and often I have to choose between a choice of translated words - usually between "he/she/it" or "they/them", which I do at random, without looking at the surrounding text.

Song lyrics often work well, but story songs and poetry work the best, and one of the best translations I've come up with was for "A Visit From St. Nicholas". How to explain the following translations:

"He was dressed all in fur" becomes "He will attract everything in skin"

"The stump of a pipe" becomes "The stump of a management"

"On Donner and Blitzen!" becomes "Since above Ton and Lance of the Lightnings!"

As mentioned above, this recording is of me, at one of the musical parties my friends and I hold once or twice a year. I would have done better to read my text out loud beforehand to avoid some of the laughing breakdowns, but hopefully, that will not get in the way of your enjoyment, if you are the type for whom this sort of wordplay is appealing.

Suddenly It's Christmas (2:46)

I don't normally share new music on the Web, but I simply had to post this track, recorded live during my December 10 radio show on WMFO in Boston.

Each year, my former cohost and I have a battle to decide who's got better taste in Christmas music. Choosing the songs for this show tends to be an all-year affair for both of us, and I was dismayed to find myself a week from the show with nothing that really blew me away. There were plenty of songs that I liked, but nothing that said Christmas 2008.

A few days before the show, I wandered into Sally O'Brien's in Somerville, MA, which is one of my local haunts. Kevin Byrne was behind the bar, talking about this Christmas song he'd written as a gift for his family in 2007, realizing that he was out of time to buy presents. He grabbed a guitar and played it for me, and I found the song I'd been searching for all season. Kevin was kind enough to let me share the live recording with you.

As we're tightening our belts and gazing cautiously toward the coming year, I think this song sums up what's important about Christmas. It's not presents, it's not money, it's togetherness and thoughtfulness. If you can take the time to enjoy the company of just one friend or family member this season, then it's all worthwhile.
