Lux and Ivy's Favorites Volume Twelve - The Lux Interior Memorial Edition - Journey into Outer Space (mp3s)

This is the first LAIF with some liner notes (about the music contained herein). I felt a need to at least tell a bit about the songs etc. This is also the first edition with a title other than LAIF and a volume number. This volume, I felt, should always be remembered as the one that “came out” after Lux’s passing.

While most of it was being compiled, it was being compiled with the knowledge that Lux is no longer with us. It really affected the song choices and their sequencing. It was sort of spooky how everything came together.

I had read the INCREDIBLY STRANGE MUSIC interview again and noticed I missed a song. THE RAVENS – A SIMPLE PRAYER. I can’t believe I missed this song until now. It’s such an amazing song. The last note truly transports you to another world. Plus the sentiment of the song really hit a chord with me around the time I was hearing it (days after Lux’s death).

Before all this I had also received a tape that The Cramps had used as intermission music on some of their tours. The tape, converted to cd, had been labeled as coming from 1986. A lot of the songs on this volume came from that tape. The tape also contained 3 songs or bits of songs from the JIMMIE HASKELL AND HIS ORCHESTRA “COUNTDOWN” LP. I’ve had the album for years and love it to death. The music was used back in the day as music beds for the Mad Daddy’s radio show.

This coupled with the FOOL’S PARADISE interview, where Lux and Ivy talk about space a lot, really set the tone of the volume, thus, the subheading; a journey into space.

Speaking of the Mad Daddy, he makes an appearance (or two?) in this edition as well. Sections of this edition came from a proposed record Lux had worked on to come out based on his hero, Pete “Mad Daddy” Myers. This was years before the eventual Norton Records “WAVY GRAVY” CD release. These bits have never appeared anywhere else that I know of.

Lastly, this edition was locked and ready to go as of today, but then I read the account of Lux’s memorial and had to rework it a little. Originally, the comp ended with Jimmy Scott’s DAY BY DAY, a song mentioned by Ivy in an interview. It’s a fucking beautiful song about love and I thought it would be a great way to end this edition.

But then I read the write up of Lux’s memorial and the fact that “For All We Know” was played there. I thought for a while if I would include it or not, but decided that if this was an aural memorial for Lux (from me), that it should be included for everyone to hear.

I hope everyone likes it and discovers some great music. This volume truly runs the gambit of sounds and I hope it truly can transport you to space too…it totally shows the range of music they listened to, haunting doo wop, exotica, crazy rockabilly, instrumentals, 60’s garage/dance and novelty tunes (you’ll never think of Andy Griffith the same way again!).

How To Overcome Discouragement

A few months ago, station manager Ken aired his annual "State Of The Station" address (Real Audio), during which he called listener-bloggers to arms in the hopes that some would help contribute to Beware Of The Blog. Compelled by a force beyond my control, I e-mailed him asking if I could help in any way. I anticipated a non-response (just like that time I applied for that Podsafe Music Library Director job at WFMU!), or a "Sorry, we've received more responses than we expected" form letter, at which point I would simply stand up and walk away from my laptop feeling somehow like I'd done my part to help. I never thought Ken would say, "I'd love to get you blogging..." That's when the fear began to manifest itself.

"Fear?" you ask. "What fear?". Well, you see, I run a music/culture blog called Swan Fungus, which is really very immature, vulgar, and tact-deficient. Furthermore -- like the most-awfulsome episodes of Seven Second Delay -- every post inevitably turns into a trainwreck. I already have enough stress in my life trying to write new and unique daily blog posts for my pathetically-small audience of "indoor kids" and collector scum. Blogging for WFMU would require me to be informative and intelligent enough to impress the brilliant and erudite audience of the nation's longest-running free-form radio station. How discouraging.

The fear had overtaken me, and I considered not responding to Ken's invitation. But then I had something of a revelation. I was visited in a dream by the ghost (even though he's not dead) of J. Martin Kohe, who told me, "Evan, you can overcome discouragement!"

Serene Roots of Korean Free Jazz

I've been working on a feature length article about Korean free music that should appear this June in Wire magazine and wanted to share some of the bounty for you WFMU folk.  Top left is a solo performance by Kang Tae Hwan.  Kang Tae Hwan was improvising as early as the '70s, one of Korea's first free players.  The only Occidental Kang Tae Hwan release is 2003's Love Time, out on the VHF label.  Some things can be ordered straight from Korea though; check this page out (click on Korea Collection). Also, Inconstant Sol blog posted a mega limited Kang Tae Hwan record here. On the whole, however, none of the early masters have left many recorded testaments of their greatness.  Alfred Harth (by his own rights an incredible saxophonist, having performed in Otomo Yoshihide's New Jazz Orchestra as well as in Cassiber with Chris Cutler back in the day) has lived in Seoul since 2001 and has collaborated with many Korean masters, has told me that this is the result of the spirit of their improvisation, which is not directed toward preservation, just toward playing in the moment. You can sense some of that sentiment in the Kang Tae Hwan clip on the top left.  The playing just blows me away, it's so meditative and perfect.  I could listen for hours.  There are more Kang Tae Hwan solo clips here.  On the right is another Kang Tae Hwan performance with Lauren Newton (singer), Miyeon (piano), and Je Chun Park (percussion).  Miyeon and Je Chun Park are two other very important Korean free jazz players, with releases as far back as 1987.

On the bottom left is a recent performance in Seoul with Alfred Harth, Joe Foster, Choi Joonyoung, Jin Sangtae and Jeong Youp Shin.  All these performers are part of the Relay circle of improvisers in Seoul.  At bottom right you'll find more fruit of the relay circuit, a duo by Kevin Parks and Jin Sangtae in a Dotolim performance, more of which you can find here.  I won't give the full report on all these incredible performers for the obvious reasons, but look for the Wire article in June if you haven't already spent all your money pledging to WFMU...

My First Mass Emailing Since I Was In a Band

Sorry for the mass emailing but due to troubling times at WFMU I have to make a first time non-Nigerian scam request for your help. I hate asking for anything. If I were to ask for anything it would be an egg and cheese on a hard roll with french fries and a coffee but unfortunately I'm not here today to ask you for that. (I really wish I were.)

As you might have heard, FMU is nearing the end of its annual beg-a-thon, and frankly we haven't been doing so hot money-wise. Yeah, the economy stinks, but due to a confluence of expensive problems hitting the station at the same time, our fund raising efforts have been a little off this year. There's a litany of expenses that FMU has to pony up to but my favorite bill to pay is the one for getting that repeater transmitter installed on the top of 4 Times Square. We're talking a strong New York City clock-radio signal there! Wanna listen to Fool's Paradise on a transistor on the beach in what's left of Coney Island? Yeah, we can do that if we get that 4TS antenna plugged in. Radio lives!

It costs a hell of a lot to run the best non-commercial radio station in the world and we do it primarily by not compromising our principals: no commercials, no underwriting and no money from The Man. The Downtowners (aka Rodd Keith) "Baby I'll Give It To You" has long been a favorite out of Rodd's output, and probably one of the few song-poems that actually could be mistaken as an actual honest-to-goodness pop song of its time, due to the simple but catchy melody and the almost-groove the band gets into (which I'm assuming is Rodd too).  Full label and songwriter info for all the tracks is on the backcover, which is in the artwork zip.

One late autumn afternoon in 1987 I walked into the basement of Upsala College’s Froeberg Hall, where TKF was doing his radio show on WFMU. He was positively giddy with schadenfraude: the stock market was down, was crashing, was destroyed! It struck me as curious, like, why should we care? Nobody we knew had enough money to invest in stock. In fact, a lot of FMU’s DJs in those days had to carefully consider whether or not they could afford the $10 or so that it cost each week to go round-trip to the station in East Orange. Like, could they really afford to do a show? Plus, this was in the days before the Internet, so I’m not sure how TKF was even following the story. Was someone phoning him with updates? Did he have a little radio in the studio so he could listen to the news? Was he just making it up, and somehow projecting his thoughts into reality via mystical DJ powers?

Today the entire economy is collapsing again, but this time we have the Internet so there’s the happy prospect of watching rich people blog about how dreadful it is to be forced to give up their vacation homes and chauffeured Rolls Royce autos. And I am not making that up. Good old Gawker has been documenting the trend under the general heading THE POORS. My favorite so far has been formerly rich magazine editor Alexandra Penney, who is now writing on Daily Beast about the terrible, terrible trials of adjusting to her new economic status. And she has a book deal to tell you all about it, too!

Now, as in 1987, as in forever, the underemployed show-offs who present their shows on WFMU do not get paid by the station. The station itself doesn’t get paid by anyone—it’s completely Listener-supported. And now, as always, WFMU runs one annual on-air fund-raising marathon to raise the money it needs to stagger through another year. But this year there are some extra problems—we need to move our transmitter, the tenant in our building has quit paying rent, and so on. (Station Manager Ken explained it all on a show last Saturday that you can hear archived here.) And of course this year’s economy isn’t making it any easier for us. But I like to look on the bright side: Our beloved Listeners, our Poors, mostly still have their crappy, underpaid jobs. They didn’t have that much to lose, so that means they can give just as much as they always managed to scrape together to keep FMU around. Some formerly rich guy may have to sacrifice membership in his private club, but YOU don’t have to give up a thing: You can have just as much WFMU as ever. All you gotta do is pledge.

Yo La Tengo, Taking Your Requests on March 13th

While people like Harvey Levin have made the art of hosting a program a mere reduction of eye-rolling and clutching an overgrown child's sippy-cup, some of us in the contemporary media want to work for your respect, and entertain, dammit. So it's a serious thing when the Hoboken's Yo La Tengo (joined by their pal and sometimes-WFMU Speakeasy sidekick Bruce Bennett) go live with mistress and master of ceremonies Pseu Braun and Gaylord Fields to create some of the best and most spontaneous radio of WFMU's annual marathon this Friday night, March 13th from 8-11 PM. It's an annual ritual (and one documented in the past on CD here): YLT come to WFMU's aid yearly by taking your requests for cover songs, any cover songs at all, in exchange for your pledge to the station. It's the last week of the fundraiser, so if you've missed out, get in. It's all to support the greatest independent radio station in the land, who vow to never interrupt Jerry Bruckheimer's dinner to ask him on mic what he thought of the Chimpanzee lady. Though WFMU's Kenny G did plop himself down with Asha Bhosle when she was chowing once to ask her what she thought of Robert Ashley operas.

Bermuda Souveneir with a Beat(les) (MP3s)

This is a gem of a souvenir record from a local Bermuda tour operator. We're not talking about one of those huge tour ships with casinos, endless drinking and an above-average chance of contracting a norovirus, but those little charter yachts that ferry people around the islands.

The first track offers perhaps the briefest narrated tour of the islands ever recorded, although they make time for some needless stereo panning at the start and two mentions of the "famous Rum Swizzle Party." At least you don't have too far to fall from the boat when the rum kicks in. It also serves up the immortal line, "If you have this recording, you have probably enjoyed a holiday island cruise."  Actually, no, I find about seven copies of this on the docks when the little boats filled with rum-soaked tourists pull up for more shopping and more sightseeing.

Side 2 serves up an allegedly Calypso tune credited to Geoff Kitson and the Island Aires (no, probably not the Hawaiian Island Aires). Everyone involved seems to have heard too much Beatles music, as "Do You Want to Know a Secret" seems to be far more of an influence than the music of the islands, from the Harrisonesque lead guitar to the minor-key harmonies. Listening to this, I can't help but wonder if Weezer had a copy when they were writing "Island in the Sun."

Best Show Marathon Week 2 (Photos)

Last night's star-studded fundraising marathon edition of The Best Show On WFMU was a tremendous success. Tom Scharpling, AP Mike, and celebrity guests Ted Leo, Aimee Mann, Paul F. Tompkins, and John Hodgman pulled in a whopping $61,000 to help keep the world's best radio show and best radio station on the air for another year. But we're still far, far away from our goal of $1.2 million! We need to raise another $450,000 by the end of Sunday night, so please KEEP PLEDGING and keep reminding your friends to pledge, too!

Radio Glitch: Unintended Locked Groove

Just saw this video of a mind-numbing, unintentionally avant garde moment on an Indiana radio station (which apparently went on and on for 30 minutes... take that, Kenny G!) on Boing Boing and thought this might be a great candidate for WFMU's Locked Groove LP, Running In Place, an item we are offering folks who donate $365 or more during our fundraising Marathon.

The Ballad Of James Burton (MP3)

     

Buddy Cagle  -  The Guitar Player (The Ballad Of James Burton)  2:48

The Guitar Player (The Ballad of James Burton) was a 1969 tribute 45 released by country vocalist Buddy Cagle, a singer on the tail end of a handful of minor hits for the Capitol, Mercury, and Imperial labels.  Cagle had a secret weapon in his arsenal for this particular recording, though, and that was.....James Burton.  Yep, it's true.  Burton himself played the guitar licks on what is surely the world's only James Burton tribute disc!

James Burton probably needs no introduction but just in case you could use a brief refresher, he made a name for himself by blasting out brilliant country, rockabilly, and pop guitar riffs on countless records and stages all over the world.  To call the man a natural would be a bit of an understatement.  In 1955, at age 16, the self-taught youngster was hired to be the guitarist in the Louisiana Hayride's house band.   He soon hooked up with local rocker Dale Hawkins and waxed the timelessly propulsive guitar solo heard in Hawkins' signature song, Suzy Q.

This boosted his profile considerably and not long afterward he was shoving off for Los Angeles to play guitar for Bob Luman.  Once in Los Angeles, his instrumental prowess attracted the attention of Ricky Nelson, who recruited Burton to play guitar for him.  The studio and road gig with Nelson lasted 8 years and launched him into the stratosphere of LA pickers.  When he left Nelson's band in 1965, Burton wasted no time establishing himself as an ace session guitarist for hire.  His picking can be heard on records by Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis, Buffalo Springfield, 5th Dimension, Merle Haggard, and Buck Owens, among others far too numerous to mention. In addition, he served time as Elvis Presley's lead guitarist, both in the studio and on the road, from 1969 until Presley's death in 1977.

What do you get when you cross monotheism with wayout synthesizers and stage mothers?  God’s Kids!

I’ve been advised by legal counsel that posting more than three of these songs might result in toxic levels of terminal cuteness for which I will be monetarily responsible for.  I’m not about to get sued over a God’s Kid.  Rather, I’m going to play the celestial bartender that gives you just enough that you’re drunk, but not drunk enough to get pulled over.

God's Kids - God's Kids

Cue the watery, funky syntesizer!  That Jesus was so funny and quirky!  And those kids are so adorable that I just wanna make sure they have the best time in Heaven that they possibly can!  I'm not sure but I listen to this (and the other songs) with the volume cranked and I was pretty sure I could hear the mother's in the background mouthing words along with their sweet little children.  But who, is that middle aged guy claiming he's a God's Kid, too.  I'm keeping an eye on him.

God's Kids - Jesus Loves

There's something theologically unsound about the opening line of this one: "Long ago, even before He made the world, God chose you and me to be his very own."  Given that the Creation Week paper work has never been released despite numerous FOI requests, we can't know if God pre-designed His course of action or just winged it.  Either way, if you're not thinking about cutting yourself mid-way through this, then you're a better person than I.

God's Kids - Won't Be's

Turn that frown upside-down, reader!  When you get up to Heaven (because, after all, you're a God's Kid too) nothing will ever suck again.  Ever.  And you'll learn that listing the good things in Heaven is better than listing all those icky Earthly things that will make your impending death such a relief - like teachers!  Or this song!  Why?  "'Cuz Jesus promised".

Me and Ian Curtis

The important question about Ian Curtis is not so much "why?" as "who?"  What bizarre concoction of humanity led to that pale glare through sad eyes, that earnest intensity, that rigor-mortis twist, those haunting, opaque lyrics? I didn't get the answer from Anton Corbijn's otherwise gorgeously filmed and serviceable 2007 bio-feature Control.  Samantha Morton, a wonderful actor to watch, played a full-blooded Deborah Curtis, complex, touchable and sympathetic. Conversely, Sam Riley's Ian Curtis is almost completely bloodless, empty—except for the fact that the actor perfectly animated Curtis' look and physicality as a masterful mimic.  Since the film was based on Deborah Curtis' book about her life with the singer, perhaps this hollowness is somehow to the point of the narrative.  Curtis may just have been a cracked actor, like the creation of his beloved Bowie.  I've got the spirit, but lose the feeling.  Feeling-feeling-feeling...feel-ing!

In my own ridiculous way, I have sought the soul of Ian Curtis, through contemplative hours of listening to Joy Division's music, the Warsaw tapes etc.  So when WFMU got the Factory flexi disc of "Incubation" (back in the middle 80s), I was inspired to allow my Curtis worship to take the form of parody, since "Incubation" is an instrumental that just begs for some lyrics, crying out for a treatment by way of the Closer LP.  Apologies in advance...

This is one piece from my archive that Daniel Blumin and I did not get around to playing during our broadcast for WFMU's radio greats weekend.  I know the track has made a lot of friends and listeners happy in years past.  I take you now to a clammy primary-school classroom...it's after hours, almost night, a janitor is mopping the hallway floor outside, mumbling to himself...little eggs are pulsating under yellow light....

It's getting to be that time! Are you almost done? Are you feeling good about paying your taxes? If not, Phil Celia and his chirping back-up singers are ready to administer a painless attitude adjustment, as offered by a Mr. or Ms. Busio, on this vintage song-poem 45.

While some song-poem outfits could be counted on to produce records which always had a certain, limited sound or format, Tin Pan Alley's releases were all over the map, and many of their early releases were legitimate, or at the very least borderline.

I was going to offer this up on my song-poem of the week project, but thought its all around weirdness was more suited for this venue. Phil Celia made a few of my favorite song-poem records, rarely in the same style from one to the next, a few of which can be heard here and here (although I may have to replace the sound file on that secibd link). This one, not only because of its unique lyrics, but also because of the presence of those insane backing vocalists, has been a favorite since the first time I gave it a spin, late last year.
