Yo La Tengo return live to the WFMU Marathon! Fresh from their Australia/New Zealand tour, Ira, James, Georgia and pal Bruce visit the fundraiser once again for your cover song requests! It's simple, tune in and pledge, hosts Pseu Braun and Gaylord Fields throw them your pitch and they'll hit it out of the park. It's your only chance to program YLT's set list, don't miss out (while helping your favorite freeform station operate another year)! It all happens live and loud, Friday night, March 5th, from 8-11PM on WFMU.
is there a min pledge that they'll take requests for?

What was that instrumental they played around 10:00?
Posted by: Elliot Harmon | March 05, 2010 at 10:12 PM
I too was wondering what was that instrumental they played around 10:00 p.m. I tried to keep score at home as best I could, and here is what I came up with:
Bob Seger - Old Time Rock & Roll
Beatles - Rain
Sandy Denny - For Shame of Doing Wrong (I Wish I Was A Fool For You)
Dump - Secret Blood (my request)
Grateful Dead - Ripple
Hotlegs (Godley & Creme) - Neanderthal Man
Fleetwood Mac - Second Hand News
Yo La Tengo - Drug Test
Brownsville Station - Smokin' In The Boys Room
Iggy Pop - TV Eye
Violent Femmes - Add It Up
Lulu - To Sir With Love
Big Star - When My Baby's Beside Me
The Embarrassment - Sex Drive
Yo La Tengo - Can't Forget
Ronettes - Be My Baby
(instrumental)
Buddy Holly - Not Fade Away
Television - Marquee Moon
Modern Lovers - Roadrunner
Grassroots - Midnight Confessions
Question Mark & the Mysterians - 96 Tears
Roxy Music - Love Is The Drug
Sam The Sham - Wooly Bully
The Scene Is Now - A Man's Coconut
(don't know) ("your reality" - bop bop bada)
Barbarians - Moulty
Neil Young - Cinnamon Girl
Chic - Le Freak
Tommy James & the Shondells - I Think We're Alone Now
Seals & Crofts - Summer Breeze
Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat
Johnny Cash - Ring of Fire
Mission of Burma - That's When I Reach For My Revolver
Flipper - Sex Bomb (medley), including, among other things: The Who - Long Live Rock; Beatles - Tomorrow Never Knows; Rodd Keith - How Can A Man Overcome His Heartbroken Pain? (American Song Poem Anthology); Kingsmen - Louie Louie; Leonard Cohen - So Long Marianne; Inflatable Boy Clams - I'm Sorry; Andrew Gold - Lonely Boy; Sesame Street - Rubber Duckie; Marvin Gaye - How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You; Velvet Underground - We're Gonna Have A Real Good Time Together; George Harrison - All Things Must Pass.

is this particular show not getting archived?
Posted by: KM | March 06, 2010 at 02:09 AM
Apparently, they never archive the Yo La Tengo shows. I asked a few years back.
Posted by: gm | March 06, 2010 at 05:01 AM
Well, damn. I often rely on the archive for pseu's show since it's on in the middle of the night here in the UK. Was really looking forward to this one too.

Is there any chance you'll make the show available as a download? Maybe as a premium for contributors?

The instrumental sounded like a rough cover of "caravan", a Duke Ellington standard
Posted by: Treefon | March 06, 2010 at 09:17 AM
Yes, Ira Kaplan confirmed that Treefon is correct: the instrumental that kicked off the fourth set was indeed "Caravan." Thanks also to Jeff Tartakov for identifying "Blue Line Swinger" in the fifth set. (I am deeply embarrassed that I failed to identify that Yo La Tengo original myself). Ira K also kindly disclosed that in the second set, "Indian Giver" was performed in medley with "Second Hand News." Finally, Ira also filled me in on some of the references in the closing medley that I didn't catch, although he thinks there were still more that he can't remember. Any help in further perfecting this list would be gratefully accepted.
