By contrast, the images at the end are mostly things I clipped out of magazines eons ago; these have lapsed into anonymity, due to my inferior record-keeping.

Perceptual Motoring

All but one of the sound-sampled discs were found recently here in Portland, OR; those present in cover only have mostly been around much longer, and -- excepting two -- found their way onto FMU's airwaves at some point. The Responsive I

Tony Coulter here, back with a few more audio-visual odds-and-ends. Since December last, I've been showcasing music acquired following my move to Portland, OR. Recently, though, coming up with the goods on a biweekly basis has become more challenging. This could be because the local used-vinyl well is running a bit dry -- or perhaps it's just that I'm currently semi-employed at best, and thus don't have too many dinars to throw around. Or maybe it's because lately I've mostly been buying $2.00-copies of dodgy '70s albums I never owned, by the likes of BTO, Kansas, and Styx -- which, it goes without saying, are not exactly blog-able, whatever their merits may be. Thus, today's post marks a shift (meaningful only to me, I'm sure): Though all proffered recordings have yet to be aired on FMU, all but one have been in my possession for years. The pictures that follow them, however, were for the most part unearthed locally -- after traveling all the way from Vietnam.

Tony Coulter here, re-back to share some discoveries and uncoveries. The sounds, per always, were recently obtained; the images have been hanging around a little longer. Several of said images are genteelly smutty in a vintage men's-magazine kind of way; NSIYLIAC, perhaps (Not Safe If You Live In A Convent). The photo above, by the way, is of a seafood restaurant's window display, and was snapped during a recent trip to Astoria, OR. Let me not forget to say thanks to both Archie Patterson and Thom Jones for some of the sounds.

Cassettes Playing Backward

  

Tony Coulter here, with another post spotlighting audio artifacts picked up in Portland, OR, my home of eight months. As always, I've given you my favorite tracks -- the ones I would have played on the air if I still had a show on FMU. This time 'round, the focus is on cassettes -- and on sounds from the '80s "cassette underground." For the sake of optic stimulation, I've also thrown in a quintet of homemade cassette covers, lovingly preserved since my own tape-trading days.
